Good news – Portable churches are meeting live again!

It has still been slow in coming but the momentum can be felt across the country now. Like light at the end of this COVID tunnel, our teams are being asked by church planters and multisite leaders about what seems to be working. Many have been waiting and watching as others ‘go first’… we are now feeling that others are optimistic and taking the next step.

So here are 7 observations from the world of today’s portable church!

1. The new front door

Digital is a HUGE new front door to your church. People investigating a church start digitally. They used to just check out the website. Now through social media, they have easy access to what your church and see what it ‘feels’ like through your streaming services. And churches have upped their digital game!

However, it has been made clear that digital is not going to permanently replace live. It lacks the full expression and power of the church body. There will always be something significant in gathering live that absolutely cannot be replaced.

Looking forward: Do not fall back into the trap of making you digital audience a secondary focus. It’s a huge front door and a way many will continue to connect with you.

2. Be relevant more often than just on Sunday!

Churches are still seeing great success at connecting with the church through midweek ‘check ins’, vision casting and/or devotionals. Some have the lead pastor reaching out each week, mid-week, some mix it up having elders, other pastoral staff or leaders join in.

One church we spoke with recently talked about the great success they had individually calling their entire database to check in on everyone and they are planning to continue these check ins. They have been highly effective and is resulting in a deeper engagement by members and attenders alike.

Looking forward: Plan for a process of personal check in by phone, text or other form of communication throughout the year. Review the effectiveness regularly with the leadership team and be flexible as to what you want out of these touchpoints.

3. Digital is not naturally friendly to the friendly church

Some church leaders are ROCKSTARS at embracing those that walk through the doors and making them feel loved – like the long-lost friend they had not met yet. A hospitality driven church or pastor who is gifted with warmth, personality, and genuine deep-felt hospitality may not have gifts that translate digitally over a streaming network.

A church with a strong digital presence is likely aided by great performance – yes in worship, but even more so with the delivery of The Gospel. The problem is that there are a ton of performances for people to choose from.

Looking forward: To navigate the “phygital” balance well, churches are using the chat feature during services, having their best engagers asking deep/thoughtful questions, giving well thought answers, offering offline text connections to deepen budding relationships. A second yet equally effective opportunity is to host “First Time Visitor” digital classes – giving out $5-10 Starbucks cards (via the Starbucks APP). For example, if your church is strong in family ministry, continue emphasizing opportunities available through your digital channel. Drop off a note talking about being all about families and give them coupons to free sundaes at a local place for their family.

4. Consider new launch methods

Several church planting organizations are advocating that launching a new church digitally before physically is going to be a wave of the future. Simply put, a core team is developed using both face-to-face AND digital methods. That core team helps network and launch the digital expression.

Geo-target the city through social channels:

Use to publicize what you are about and launch your interest meetings

Use to showcase sample teaching

Launch digitally and build momentum and attendance size

After many months, then launch a physical expression

This is the Amazon strategy…. The church becomes well known and familiar digitally, and then launches a physical expression that is everything and more than the digital engagement promised.

5. Churches burdened with debt are moving out and going portable

While this offers a “church reset” of sorts, it also has great potential of reactivating people that have been lost in the pews.

6. Churches that were portable going permanent

While this makes our Portable Church Team sad… we also get excited that the portability strategy has been successful at developing great momentum – enough to plant long lasting roots!

The COVID Crisis has changed things. Some of those changes are good and some just are not! The real estate market for newly available commercial properties will see an up-tick as some businesses just won’t survive. Likewise, and unfortunately, some churches won’t survive as well. To that end, it is being forecasted that there will be an increased number of churches that will merge, most of which will involve worship facilities of some sort.

Many well-managed churches will be able to respond appropriately and make the jump into better facilities or into a multisite strategy.

7. Considering the venue as a tool

Soon, we will launch another blog that addresses various venue types that are working well when schools are just not available. The adage is true, “necessity is the mother of invention!” The need to meet again is getting churches to become innovative… thinking outside the box. Indeed, some facility-types (High School, Middle School, YMCA, Theater) are more ideal for meeting spaces. However, as these natural rental facilities aren’t available churches are considering and finding some amazing alternatives.

The shutdown has prompted many leaders in the church to consider the effectiveness of their ministry. There have been changes in leadership, ministry methods, discipleship, and evangelistic outreach. In some cases, there have been wholesale changes to financial fitness and the role that property plays as tools in the ministry. On the journey back to “normal” (whatever that was), churches are evaluating it all! As Peyton Jones from Exponential states “Churches are still born out of a desire to draw a crowd, but the future belongs not to churches that can draw a crowd, but churches that can penetrate one.”

Whitepaper #2 on unique Multisite Strategies.

(See the first whitepaper featuring Life.Church here).

Manna Church based in NC was featured in Outreach Magazines Top 100 list on all three of their categories, Fastest Growing, Largest and Top Reproducing Churches. This is their incredible story discussing their multiplication strategies.

We sat down with Senior Pastor Michael Fletcher and downloaded his wisdom. We ended with this resource jam packed full of insight on how Manna Church through trial and error finally landed on a multisite strategy that works for their church and their unique calling. With a vision to see a church at every large military base, Manna has fine tuned their strategy to create 15 successful campuses across the US in addition to a number of home churches and more in the works. The ‘why and how’ they capture this vision is incredible.

Here are some of the main takeaways from this resource (to name a few).

In this whitepaper Micheal speaks to the challenge of ministering to members of the military due to frequent redeployment. All churches deal with turn over, but due to Manna’s high percentage of military congregants they experience much greater than average losses of people. Manna flipped the script and changed the high turnover rate instead into an average growth rate of 18%.

Another key lesson from the whitepaper is how they internally identify, train up and send new leaders to launch and run new campuses. They use a very unique approach that they have found great success with (you’ll have to download the whitepaper to see what it is :)). Pastor Michael also dives into the why and how launching ‘portable campuses’ is a key strategy of their growth and sustainability (and why they choose Portable Church®!)

Again, there is even more to the resource than what we’ve listed, but we hope this intrigues you enough to read this short, 6 page resource about one of the leading multisite churches in the United States.

*When our team sat down with Pastor Michael, we were so blessed and amazed by his perspective. And guess what… we recorded our conversation so you can listen and be blessed too! We weren’t expecting as much as we were getting so we started the recording a little late, but we strongly encourage you to check out this story and the recording. Let it inspire you to move into the unique calling God has placed on your church.

If your church is considering multiplying or adding another campus check out the video here and make sure you download the resource for the full story!

by Jeff Reed: With the reductions and restrictions of large gatherings over the past week, churches all over the world have been forced to create a space for their church family to gather together on the weekend, without physically being next to one another. For portable City Light Church in Rochester Hills, MI, this meant immediate action of creatively deciding how to continue meeting after being asked to vacate the school they were meeting in until the threat of the coronavirus has subsided.

Not ever having live video streamed their weekend services before, and after seeing the release of the portable live streaming kits (CODE Series) announced just over a week ago by Portable Church® Industries and Living As One, the leadership at City Light decided the NCODE Series 1 was exactly what they needed to continue their weekend gathering online.

“On Wednesday, March 11th, I received a call from our school telling us that due to the virus they were canceling all reservations and outside renters effective immediately,” Lead Pastor, Jason Rollin, says. The school has not given City Light Church a return date, nor an exact process of how they will be notified of a reinstatement of their rental agreement. Since the school is complying to state and federal requests to temporarily shut the school down, once those authorities give the ‘all clear’, City Light will be allowed to return.

When asked what his initial thinking and plan was after the school informed him of the shut down, Pastor Jason explained, “My initial thinking was simple… how can we still have church? I remembered getting emails from Portable Church® Industries about their new live streaming solution in the beginning of March. I never thought we were ready or in a good place to begin live streaming yet, so I didn’t give it much thought at the time. But when everything happened with our school, I immediately remembered the emails from PCI.” Pastor Jason goes on to explain how he immediately called Portable Church® Industries after being notified of the shut down and asked if the new CODE Series streaming solutions would work for them. “They were very confident this could be an answer to prayer. After checking to see how many they had left in stock, they discovered there was only one more unit available at the time. I said yes, I’ll take it!”

Within 48 hours of being notified to vacate the school they were meeting in, City Light Church received their NCODE Series 1 live streaming solution on Friday, March 13th from Portable Church® Industries. After receiving the NCODE, they were given an on-board training call from Living As One that same day for assistance and guidance in setting up and learning the Living As One streaming platform. Within minutes, they were operational and prepared to live video stream their worship service for that Sunday.“Our church was so excited when they heard the news that we would still have church on Sunday! They couldn’t believe that even though we are a portable church, and a fairly young church, that we could have the capability of doing this in spite of everything going on in the world. Our people got so excited that they started organizing ‘watch parties’ at different homes throughout the community where they would watch service together and still have limited fellowship,” said Pastor Jason.

By using a CODE Series live streaming solution alongside the Living As One streaming platform, City Light Church was able to simultaneously live video stream to their website, Facebook, and YouTube on Sunday, March 15th. With an average weekly attendance of 400, Pastor Jason estimates their online attendance on Sunday reached 358 viewers via their website, 1,286 viewers via Facebook, and 110 viewers via YouTube. 1,754 people not only viewed City Light’s livestream on Sunday, but virtually worshiped our Lord together through the internet.

When asked how easy the NCODE Series 1 was to setup and use, this is what Pastor Jason had to say… “The CODE was incredibly easy to setup and use. The on-boarding call from Living As One was so great and easy to understand. They really made it user friendly for people to get started right away and their customer service team was amazing. They answered emails within 10 minutes and their tech support on Sunday was simple. No wait, answered my questions, just perfect. One of the features I love about the solution is after we film our live service, we can then rebroadcast that message as many times as we want that day as if it were live. It gives people multiple opportunities to watch the service. You can still preach the Gospel to your congregation through the internet even if you’re not the biggest tech guy or don’t have a big tech team.”

The easy-to-use and portable NCODE Series 1 live streaming solution allowed City Light Church the ability to broadcast their worship service from a remote location (a warehouse), and gave their church family the opportunity to gather together via live video streaming online. With the situation we as a society are currently facing, there is much uncertainty and fear. But we as a body of Christ have hope and know that God is bigger than any sickness. Ministry does not need to stop just because the world has. Pastor Jason says it best, “Portable Church® Industries and Living As One have made the CODE Series so incredibly simple to live stream that I truly believe anyone and any church can live stream on Sunday mornings. Because of our displacement, we are literally filming our service from an old warehouse. If we can do it, you can too. This is a unique time in history. People in the world are looking for hope, and we have the opportunity to continue to share that hope. Church might look differently for a few months longer, but embrace technology and watch what Jesus does!

God did not bring us this far just to bring us this far.

by Portable Church Industries: While we are humbled by the impact we have made for the Kingdom over the last 25 years, we are pumped about what God can do through us over the next 25.

For Portable Church, opening up seats to hear the Gospel is our most important metric.

This does not mean we ignore other key metrics that assure we are strong financially and operationally, but our underlying mission, the reason we exist, is to assure as many people as possible know Jesus.

As we enter 2020 with new product and service offerings, as well as more efficient operations, we will set new and challenging financial and operational targets but we will also continue to track and celebrate ‘seats opened to hear the Gospel.’

Why? Two reasons. First, we believe, and studies support, new seats opened to hear the Gospel is the most effective way to assure the numerical growth of the Body of Christ. New seats are the best way to reach new generations, new residents, and new people groups. And this points back to our mission of more people knowing Jesus.

The second reason is what this metric does for our internal team members. Any organization knows the value of someone feeling a sense of purpose and significance at work is indispensable. Work that will outlive their time here on earth.

Not success, but significance.

Revenue and profitability, delivery performance and productivity, number of leads and close rates, are critical metrics to track to assure long term sustainability of a company. They measure the success of decisions made, actions taken, and money spent. But true significance goes much deeper.

And I am not talking about job satisfaction. I am referring to job significance. As Justin Sweeten, our Integration and Logistics Manager puts it, “Our company mission allows me to participate in something greater than myself.”

The Bible never promised us work would be easy. And at Portable Church, just like all other companies, we have some very hard and exhausting seasons. But having a company mission that drives something that will matter 50 years from now makes it easier to navigate the rough waters. Rachel Davey, our Administrative Assistant, says it best: “No matter how chaotic the day may be, we are able to set every difference aside and come together with the one thing that unites us all: Our love and belief in Christ, His love for humanity, and how we can make that known.”

And significant work is not only good for employees. It’s also good for the churches we work with.

So we will continue to improve our products and services. We will continue to make our internal operations more efficient. We will continue to strive to be the industry leader in portable systems. We will do all of this with passion and drive, knowing if we do all of these things well, more people will know Jesus, increasing the population of the Kingdom.

I’m honored to have Jeff Beachum of Portable Church Industries with us today. PCI helps churches go portable.

Portable Church started one day when a portable church was struggling in a middle school setting. Finally one of the pastors went to a volunteer, who was an engineer, and asked for help in figuring it out. The volunteer put together a system to make setting up and tearing down easier. From there other churches asked for help in their own settings, and it grew into its own company.

Grow big by being small. // Portable Church funded a study at Leadership Network called Latest Multi-site Trends: How a New Generation of Pastors is Shifting to Strategies That Reproduce and Multiply. The big idea pulled from the study was that 83% of pastors under the age of 40 have a vision to plant or launch a new campus. Years ago pastors sought to grow a giant church and so we had mega-churches being built and reproducing. Now the trend is to grow big by being small. Rather than a church expression being in one big location, younger pastors have a vision for smaller expressions of church to be spread throughout different neighborhoods reaching unique groups of people and communities.
Shift your focus. // In these smaller expressions, churches are able to focus more on leadership development and creating a leadership pipeline because volunteers and new leaders are key to the multisite and portable church, or church plant movement. Similarly smaller churches allow for more disciple-making opportunities because they are naturally closer and more intimate communities.
The church is a movement. // In the first five years of a church’s life, it is still a movement – it’s still fresh and attracting brand new people instead of transplants. But the longer a church is established, there’s a draw toward security, acquiring property, having a set address and not rocking the boat. According to the study, new churches—both permanent and portable—have 24% more growth in first five years than established churches. Additionally, being portable resulted in 12% more growth than any other expression of church. So pursuing portable church options is a great method for growing quickly and reaching your community.
Customize your system to reflect your DNA. // When creating a portable system for a church, Portable Church Industries first meets with the church staff. The first half of the meeting covers a three-day period and is used to discover who they are, why they want a new site, and why they think the community needs their church. Portable Church goes to the new facility they will be using and shows them how their church’s unique DNA can be expressed in that high school or YMCA or whatever it is. A lot of churches think portability is hard or won’t be a good expression to reflect their DNA, but PCI has lots of resources, videos and photos demonstrating examples of how they’ve helped other churches create volunteer-friendly systems for set-up and tear-down. Typical systems take between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes to set up, and then are torn down in forty-five minutes to an hour.

You can learn more about Portable Church Industries at www.portablechurch.com and read the two studies referenced in this podcast at www.leadnet.org/portable/. At unSeminary we’ve teamed up with Portable Church to offer our listeners some more resources to help you decide whether the Portable Church systems are right for you and you can find those at www.portablechurch.com/unseminary.
