Insights From Rick

1. In America, Christians no longer get their primary identity from either Jesus or the church but, rather, through politics

The politicization of American Christians is a terrible problem. Rick points out, “If you know anything about church history, you know that every time the church has gotten in bed with government, it got pregnant. And it was a bad situation.”

Rick cautions pastors and churches against taking a partisan stance as a church. Just don’t do it.

2. If you’re afraid to talk about race in your church, start building trust with your congregation first

So many pastors have avoided the conversation about racism in America out of fear of the backlash that they will receive from the members of their church. It’s understandable, but Rick recommends you start by building trust with your people. Everything in leadership is built on trust, and if you have enough trust with those people, they will follow you into difficult spaces, even where they might initially disagree.

Once you build that trust, Rick recommends you start asking minorities to regularly share their stories of racism with your people.

3. Grief will be a huge door to evangelism over the next few years

Rick is convinced that we’re going to go through a tsunami of grief over the next couple of years.

Many people have lost many things—loved ones, the prom, their graduation, the birth of their first grandchild and many even missed important funerals. There’s so many things that people have lost that, when it finally catches up and they realize what they’ve lost, there will be a lot of grief.

This grief is going to be a front door for evangelism in the next few years, because so many people are dealing with this. As a pastor, you need to find a way to prepare your church to reach the grieving people around them.

If you want practical help overcoming some of the biggest challenges leaders face, my book Didn’t See It Coming: Overcoming the 7 Greatest Challenges That Nobody Expects and Everyone Experiences tackles the seven core issues that take people out: cynicism, compromise, disconnectedness, irrelevance, pride, burnout, and the emptiness of success and provides strategies on how to combat each.

I wrote the book because no 18 year old sets out to be cynical, jaded and disconnected by age 35. Yet it happens all the time.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here’s what top leaders are saying about Didn’t See It Coming:

“Seriously, this may be the most important book you read this year.” Jud Wilhite, Lead Pastor, Central Church

“Powerful, personal, and highly readable. ” Brian Houston, Global Senior Pastor, Hillsong

“Whatever challenge you’re facing, whatever obstacle you’re hoping to overcome, whatever future you dream or imagine, there is something powerful for you here.” Andy Stanley, Founder, North Point Ministries

“Uncommonly perceptive and generous…You have to read this book.” Ann Voskamp, NYT bestselling author

“Masterful.” Reggie Joiner, CEO Orange

“Deep biblical insight, straightforward truth, and practical wisdom to help you grow.” Craig Groeschel, Pastor and NYT bestselling author

“This book is sure to help you.” Daniel H. Pink, NYT bestselling author

Over the years, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most about being a public speaker is having opportunities to hang out with Carey…It’s not a matter of if you’ll run into these challenges; it’s a matter of when. Be prepared by spending a little time with a leader who has already been there.” Jon Acuff, NYT best-selling author

“Nieuwhof’s book provides expert guidance…with an accuracy that pierces the heart.” Nancy Duarte, CEO Duarte Inc.

His growing cynicism almost took him down, but around age 30, he learned to recapture wonder.

He explains how wonder can not only recapture your personal hope (and faith), but how it’s an essential ingredient to leadership and crafting a story that rallies people.

INSIGHTS FROM HARRIS

1. The rules of persuasion and illusion are universal

So, what actually is magic and illusion? And, what makes it work? According to Harris, there are a set of tactics and strategies that magicians use to persuade their audiences into amazement. Those same tactics can also be used by speakers, salespeople, marketers and pastors.

2. The more you know, the more you see, the more cynical you become

Many illusionists (and leaders in general) can become cynical because they “see how the magic is made,” and lose the ability to wonder or imagine for themselves. Knowledge and cynicism usually come hand-in-hand, and as a leader you need to protect yourself from it.

3. When telling stories, focus on connection not conversion

So many leaders (especially pastors) are looking to communicate a point, or get a conversion, when they tell a story to an audience. Harris has learned that a story is much more effective when you aim for connection with a story rather than conversion.

6 Marks of the Church and Why They Matter

By Ed Stetzer

Many may hear the words ‘purpose’ and ‘church’ and immediately think about Pastor Rick Warren’s book The Purpose Driven Church. In the book, Rick lists some of the purposes of church—in total, there are 12 characteristics that he argues all purpose-driven churches should share.

Some of these purposes include:

Having a Purpose Statement to describe the church’s promise to build the church in accordance with five New Testament purposes: worship, evangelism, fellowship, discipleship, and ministry.

Programming by purpose—again, to reflect the five New Testament purposes.

Preaching by purpose to reflect the churches commitment to each area of purpose.

Budgeting by purpose, categorizing expenditures based on the purposes they’re serving.

Form small groups on purpose, insuring that each small group helps participants fulfill each of the five purposes in their daily lives.

The idea of being a part of a ‘driven church’ is something we hear about a lot right now. It seems like there should be a certain purpose or set of purposes that should be motivating churches in the work that they’re doing.

I think you get the idea—the five New Testament purposes should flow into everything from what a church does, preaches, spends money on, etc. It’s a helpful way to talk about how purposes are lived out.

But today I think we need to ask ourselves: What are the things that undergird the church itself?

In other words, what is one level below the purposes? What are the marks?

The Marks of the Church

If you were to go into a bookstore and buy a book on ecclesiology, you’d find that sometimes people refer to the purposes of the church as the ‘marks’ of the church. (There is even a ministry called 9 Marks, named after the marks of the church.)

The challenge is that sometimes these marks are seen as a reformed or calvinistic idea, maybe in part because 9 Marks is just that.

However, if they are marks of the church, they should be in every church, everwhere. They’re things that a church should have in every culture, in every time, in every geographical place. It means that a biblically faithful church in Senegal would have these marks just as a biblically faithful church in Seattle would, whether that church is reformed, arminian, charismatic, or whatever.

If that is to be the case, those marks also should be anchored in Scripture—this is what makes them timeless and applicable across cultural and geographical contexts.

In a previous article, I list my own six marks of the church.

Churches should:

1 – Function under the authority of Scripture

2 – Have biblical leadership

3 – Exercise biblical preaching and teaching

4 – Partake in the ordinances/sacraments

5 – Be in covenant community

6 – Live/go on mission together

My list, driven from a missiological approach, focuses primarily on the fundamentals. Churches should have biblical preaching and teaching—I think everyone from a house church in China to a megachurch in Korea would agree with that.

Churches should also take the Lord’s Supper. After all, it was Jesus who, on the eve of his crucifixion, set the model: “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me’” (Luke 22:19).

Baptism should also be valued—again, Jesus modeled this for his disciples through his own baptism by John in the Jordan river at the beginning of his ministry.

Why Does It Matter?

These six things are the marks of the church, but I think we can safely say that the five New Testament purposes from Warren’s book are good descriptions of what (using his term) drives churches in their various areas of ministry.

Marks matter and so do purposes, strategies, plans, and more.

Starting with the marks helps us missiologically. It considers the existential attributes that make a church a church. That’s essential.

However, you can have all the marks of a church and not be a particularly fruitful church. Phrased another way, you can be faithful to the marks and not fruitful in mission.

My hope is we can do both— think discerningly about marks, but also think strategically about purposes and more.

3 Insights from Terry

1. Dysfunctional behavior is usually the symptom of a deeper problem

Terry is convinced that aberrant behavior is driven by deep wounds and false beliefs and ungrieved loss. When he looks back on his life, his depression, workaholism, and agoraphobia was never the problem, it was the symptom of a deeper problem of ungrieved losses from his past.

Eventually, Terry was able to work through the deeper issues of his past, and has since begun leading others through a similar healing journey. He works with people who have addictions, anger issues, deep depression, and many other struggles so that they can begin to attack the real wounds that are impacting them.

2. Ministry is a series of ungrieved losses

“Every loss in life demands an appropriate season of grieving, whether you’ve lost your favorite person or your favorite end.” Now, when Terry walks into a room of pastors, he can feel the ungrieved loss in that room. This breaks his heart and causes him to want to help more people.

When Terry first taught this in a seminar, someone grabbed him and said, “Say that quote again. Just say it again.” And he did. When he repeated the statement, the person started to cry because they realized when you experience a loss and just move on, rationalize it, or get onto the business of work, you cheat the grieving process.

3. It takes an emotional laden positive experience to overcome an emotional laden negative experience

Through his time of personal healing and counseling other leaders, Terry has learned that knowing scripture isn’t enough to get over the deep wounds and fears of our past. Terry has learned that it takes an emotional laden positive experience to overcome an emotional laden negative experience.

Just knowing the scripture, “Perfect love casts out fear,” does not cast out fear. It takes a very real experience with perfect love himself to cast out fear. This is what Terry encourages people to seek.

“A refreshingly transparent guide for all leaders in a wide variety of industries.” Bryan Miles, Co-Founder and CEO, BELAY

3 Insights from John and Carey

1. Burnout is a factor for all driven people

Most leaders eventually hit a wall, whether it’s clinical burnout, their marriage falling apart, their relationship with their kids deteriorating, or realizing they simply need to delegate. Every driven leader gets there. When they hit this wall, they realize that a change needs to be made, but most have no clue what that change is.

Although it’s not the same for everyone, it is almost always tied to a lie that a leader believes. Carey has learned that he, as a leader, was believing that his performance defined his worth. This led to him trying to perform more and more until he hit his wall. Ever since, he has been intentional about living in a way today that will help him thrive tomorrow.

2. The senior leader sets the culture

Over many years of thinking and inspecting his own leadership, Carey has learned that unhealthy leaders create unhealthy cultures. He knows this because he used to be that unhealthy leader. Now, he has spent years changing how he views the purpose of work in his and his team’s lives.

He used to think that he uses people to get work done, and that led to an unhealthy culture. Now, he has realized that he is trying to use work to grow the people that work there. In a healthy culture, people are the goal, not the work.

3. The appropriate level of vulnerability to have from the stage is…

Carey has learned that the voice and position we communicate from makes a massive impact on whether the message is helpful or not. Many leaders naturally take a position where they are up on top of a mountain, and if you want access to them, you have to come sit at their feet. Carey has learned that this position doesn’t work. People admire your strengths but they resonate with your weaknesses.

So what voice does Carey use? He uses a voice that is “ in the field” with the reader. This voice is saying, “I know this is hard, I struggle too, but maybe making this change will help us.” When Carey uses this voice, he is much more engaged with his audience.

David Platt has seen some of the greatest suffering on earth and has again, recently, asked some of the toughest questions: In a universe governed by a good God, is hell really a place? Will so many people born into an earthly hell really end up in eternal hell?

David shares how seeing profound suffering and asking those questions hasn’t led him away from faith but deeper into his faith. And, he shares what needs to change in Christianity is really going to impact the world.

3 Insights from David

1. When sharing the gospel, some people will always think we are weird—we can’t let that stop us

In today’s isolated culture, it is so easy to let the fear of being perceived as “weird” stop us from sharing our faith with the people in our lives. One way David overcomes this is by finding ways to work different parts of the Christian experience into his daily verbiage without sounding “super spiritual.”

He tries to do this as often as he can in his life. At the gym, he will talk to the guys that he works out with between sets about what God has done in his life. He doesn’t let the fear of being seen as “weird” stop him because that’s going to happen to anybody trying to share their faith including the early apostles, and even Jesus himself.

2. Have we lost our ability to weep?

While on a trip in the mountain villages of the Himalayas, David saw people with urgent needs up close and personal—young girls in brothels, men with infections eating away their bodies, and villages of people where 50% of kids die before the age of eight. When he encountered these people, it caused him to weep in his hotel room that evening in a way that he had not wept in a long time.

Looking back on that experience, David realized that it is so easy for us to talk about the world’s urgent spiritual or physical needs and speculate about what we can do to fix it without feeling any major emotions about it. We have gone numb to just how tragic the pain and suffering in the world is. We have to be aware of this and do our best to share the gospel with as many people as humanly possible.

3. No other world religion compares to the gospel of Jesus

There are some very real questions that people have about the world if the gospel is true. “If God truly is good, why is the world so full of pain and suffering?” David was seriously wrestling with these questions while writing the journal that eventually turned into his most recent book, Something Needs To Change.

One of the realizations David made is that for the people that are in the midst of suffering, there isn’t a better belief system in the world than the gospel of Jesus Christ. What would you rather tell a young girl caught in the midst of sex trafficking? That the whole world is happening by chance and that we are living out what our DNA pre-programmed us to do? Or that there is a God that loves her and will judge all men’s actions at the end of time? That is an obvious choice.

Next Episode: Clay Scroggins

Clay Scroggins is back on the podcast with some fresh insights from his brand new book, How to Lead in a World of Distraction. In an open and vulnerable interview, Clay talks about how the pressures of leadership led to him missing some of the signs of emotional ill-health, breaking down in his boss’s office, and finding quiet and healing in a noisy world. And if you think this is just theory, Clay is learning all this while leading a church of over 9,000, nurturing his marriage, and parenting five kids under the age of ten.

by Brandon Cox: When my wife and I were first married, we lived in Beebe, Arkansas where I served as pastor of a small church and we commuted several days per week to Conway, an hour away, for classes at Central Baptist College. The chariot that carried us back and forth was a 1991 Dodge Spirit. It wasn’t fancy, but it was faithful. Until…

One day I noticed that, while I was driving normally, the car started slowing down. The engine was running. The RPM’s were normal. The battery was fine. But the speed would drop until we were only driving 15 or 20 mph, even with the gas pedal almost floored.

Some guys in our church offered to take care of the problem, so they borrowed it for a day and removed the catalytic converter, then returned it to us, having diagnosed the problem as a backup of exhaust. Nevermind that the car was now illegal and missing a fairly important part of the exhaust system.

But that didn’t fix the problem. The next time we made the long commute, the car slowed down again. This time, I wheeled into a mechanic’s shop in the edge of Conway and they put it up on the rack to check it out.

The head mechanic showed us the problem. Upon removing the front wheel, they’d found that the brake rotor was bright red, essentially on fire. The master cylinder was faulty and had been applying the front brakes the entire time we’d been driving, even though I wasn’t pushing the brake pedal at all.

All that gas and energy spent, with nothing to show for it!

And that’s exactly how far too many of us are living life.

We’re working all the hours we can, and filling the rest of our time with activity until we don’t have any time or energy left. Then we spend all the money we make trying to obtain the nicest things we can afford.

We’re spending ourselves. Our time. Our money. Our lives. The critical question is, of course… does it matter? Is it a worthy expense?

Tragically, we’re often left unfulfilled and unsatisfied, wondering what life is really all about. Just skim the book of Ecclesiastes and hear the heart of a man who had come to his final days and wondered, is this all there is?

Solomon proclaimed that all the working and grinding and hustling was just “vanity” and “more vanity.” Keep reading until the end and you’ll see that the light dawned on this seemingly cynical writer. He concluded that life does make sense in light of our being created by God for eternal purposes and not merely earthly, temporal pursuits.

The Apostle Paul once said,

So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.

– Colossians 3:1-2, The Message

Paul gives us, in this passage, a fairly simple way to make sure we’re maximizing the investment potential of our time and money.

Put your energy into spiritual things, for which you were created!

Don’t get to the end of this life and look back only to realize you spent all of our energy getting nowhere. Give your life to the pursuit of God’s purposes for you and you’ll never have to question the value of your investment!

by Brandon Cox: As I write this, we’re three days from our church’s big Grand Opening at our new location.

Our church is seven years old. We’ve met in an office, a hotel, a college campus, two movie theaters, and for the last three years, a leased location.

Almost a year ago, we bought what used to be a kid’s party and play place. Hence, this carpet…

Fun, eh? Yeah, we ripped that out on day one of construction.

This week, the exterior is being painted, signage is being installed, the final pieces of audio-video tech are getting dialed in, and we were finally cleared for occupancy. It’s getting real.

Now the carpet looks like this…

Less fun, but overall, way better.

Now all we really have to deal with is the weather – right now there’s the possibility of an early March winter weather event with a few inches of snow falling on Sunday morning!

At the end of the day, it won’t matter too much. What really counts isn’t what happens on a single Sunday. It’s what happens Sunday after Sunday as we become the church God is calling us to be. What matters is that we’re driven by God’s purposes and never by buildings, budgets, traditions, programs, or personalities.

As a leader, I’ve found myself needing to get a lot of things done in this last year. We’ve needed to raise funds. Make plans. Show up at closings and sign lots of paperwork. Hire architects and contractors. Ask for lease extensions. Order signage. Manage expectations, schedules, and deadlines. Work with cities. Get moved out. Get moved in. Argue with utility companies. And motivate staff and volunteers.

Sounds like a lot, but in reality, I’m surrounded by totally amazing people. Our staff and leadership team is amazing. My wife has been amazing. Our church is full of people who love giving their time, talent, and treasure. And we hired an amazing contractor, too!

One of the biggest lessons God has taught me in the last year is the value of leading under pressure.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t actually like pressure. I don’t invite it. I don’t always perform well under it. Not once have I ever said to anyone, ya know, what I’d really like right now is some more pressure.

But I have come to embrace that, when the pressure rises, people can rise, too. We grow under pressure, and that’s just the way God designed us.

They say that heat + pressure + time is what produces diamonds. It takes the same exact combination to produce a good waffle, too, but I digress…

When the pressure is on in your leadership, you can rest assured it’s time to do some growing. Good things are right around the corner. You’re being squeezed for a reason, and the reason is usually so that you will be made ready for whatever success or prosperity lies ahead.

But whether pressure builds you up or crushes you will depend on one factor – your willingness to keep going through it.

You can complain, think the worst, prophecy failure and pain over your future, and retreat. You’ll miss out on the victory, but you’ll also avoid some hard work and the pain of change.

Or, you can embrace the pressure you’re under and be reminded that it’s ultimately for your good.

When the deadline is looming, the resources are short, some people are getting uneasy, and you feel like you’re almost to the end of your ability to win in this moment, remember that leaders are always, always forged through heat, under pressure, over time. Like a good waffle. Or diamond. Whichever is the more motivating picture for you.

How you choose to label this moment, what you choose to think about this moment, and how you choose to move forward in this moment make all the difference in your growing into the leader God desires for you to become.
