By Ed Stetzer: Looking across the spectrum of church planting networks and denominations, there are nine basic systems that make up a typical Church Planting System in a North American church planting network.

Prayer

A prayer strategy is the lifeline of any church planting network. One example of this is a regular prayer time, such as the way that the C2C Network staff and planters pray every day at 10:02 according to Luke 10:2, asking the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His field. Other networks mobilize their existing churches through the web, social media, or postcards to pray for new or potential church plants and planters.

Recruiting/Discovery

The best recruitment and discovery strategies don’t just focus on attracting potential church planters from outside the movement—they also focus on making disciples from within the movement who will one day plant churches. A recruitment strategy often provides a clear pathway for someone who feels called to church planting but needs help discerning how to respond to that call.

Assessment

The assessment process is often kicked off with a pre-assessment process, which allows the network to get to know the potential planter. There are various ways assessments can happen today, from online applications to video interviews to the more common approach of utilizing a multi-day assessment center. Assessment philosophies can range from helping candidates discern their church planting calls to assessing the levels of financial partnerships with the candidates.

By Ed Stetzer: People in your church are going to be nervous. They’re going to say, “Now, wait a second. If we send people out, won’t our church decline?” Statistically, the most likely scenario is that it won’t. Jeff Farmer (researcher and professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) did a comparison study of 75 churches and found that churches who planted, when controlling for other factors of similar size and passion, actually grew. When you send people out to plant, others will show up and step into leadership roles.

When I planted a church in Erie, Pennsylvania, we decided to start two daughter churches. We said we were going to have twins, so we planted two daughter churches on one day with residents. For six months, these residents were on staff where they walked with us and we trained them. We then gave them a three-month transition period where they had a fishing license to anybody in our church. We blessed and encouraged them to approach anyone in the church with a challenge to come and plant with them. At that point, we were running 350–400 in attendance, so when they got about 50–75 people to go with them, it hurt. It was a lot more than we expected.

One whole worship team and a drummer—we had two worship teams—got a vision for church planting and decided to leave. This meant we now had no drummers in our church when they would leave. We said to our church during one of the preview services, “Listen. We’re so excited about what’s happened and how you have rallied around these church plants we’re sending out. But did you notice there’s no drummer today? We had to use a track.”

After the service, one of the members came up to me and said, “You know, I could be the drummer.”

And I said, “That’s awesome, man. But have you ever been a drummer before?”

He said, “Yeah, yeah. I used to tour professionally as a drummer.”

“What?” I was shocked because our previous drummer struggled. I mean we had a drummer all these years and he was painfully bad, but at least we had a drummer. And now this guy, who was a professional drummer, who had played for a couple different famous bands, comes up to me and tells me this?

“Are you serious?” I asked him, “Why have you never said anything?”

“Well, you know, I just wanted the guy to have a shot who was up there.”

“Dude, you’re killing me.”

This is what happened throughout the church. After we sent out people, others began stepping up to the challenge and taking on leadership responsibilities. So, cast a vision for this and allow God to send people to fill the void!

This was an excerpt from the book that I wrote with Daniel Im, 1000 Churches: How Past Movements Did It—And How Your Church Can, Too. You can learn more and download it for free here.

Oh, they never say it exactly like that. But when you invite someone to get involved in the church plant before you have weekly Sunday morning gatherings, it’ll come up. Usually, it sounds more like:

Sounds cool! Let me know when you’ve launched and we’ll check you out
You don’t have a building yet? Keep me posted
I’ll definitely be there for the grand opening!
etc.

If you’re unprepared, it can be disheartening. You see the beauty and adventure going on now and want people to share it.

But instead of letting their response deflate you, accept it as the challenge that it is.

What’s Really Going On

Encoded in this common response are all kinds of potential messages:

You Don’t Fit in my Box

Somewhere in our collective American psyche, there’s a baseline understanding that church happens on Sunday mornings. Your church plant is not at that stage yet, so some people won’t know what to do with you. You might even get asked if you’re some kind of cult.

My Theology of Church is Off

Some people have only experienced a consumerist, non-participatory, only-show-up-on-Sunday-morning kind of church. That may be their fault or another church’s. Regardless, they don’t know what being part of the church is like Monday through Saturday. Or they’re not interested.

I’m Not Ready to Commit

They might be begging you off because they’re not ready to commit to getting involved in a brand new church. They may or may not have any idea what it even entails. But probably they’re politely telling you no.

How to Prepare

Here are some pointers on how to be ready for the “when you’re a real church” response to an invitation:

Let go of any need to control their response
Pray through how God would have you lovingly challenge their assumptions; this may be their God-appointment to grow their ecclesiology
Recognize that this response overwhelmingly comes from already-churched people
Remember that they are people, not grist for your organizational machine
Be clear about what exactly you’re inviting them to (that isn’t Sunday morning worship)

I don’t have to convince you that church is so much more than an event on Sunday morning. But you may have to convince them.

How do you recruit a solid launch team?

This week you will be getting a preview of our Developing a Core Team Course. This is day one of five where the focus will be on building a solid core team as you prepare to plant a church or campus. In today’s episode, Pastor Ronnie Parrott from Christ Community Church in Huntersville, NC talks about recruiting a launch team and specifically answers the following:

How should we look at recruiting a launch team? What does training look like?

In this episode, you’ll discover:

How to cast a vision for your church plant or campus.
Practical ways to recruit people that align with your vision.
