You are going to face pain.

People are going to leave your team.

Issues are going to arise.

There will be times you will mess something up.

Andy Stanley frames leadership as the reality of “managing tension.”

Since part of your impact is in how you perform when there is stress and uncertainty;  I want to highlight some common pressures leaders just like you face and some keys on how to thrive in the middle of them.

Leading Change

You have to lead change in some form. Leadership requires the foresight and fortitude to initiate change.  In case you don’t know, change is hard! Leaders are often shocked by what is required to lead the necessary changes for your organization. Tension, hard conversations, telling someone “no” and being on an island around your idea can cause a leader to wish they had signed up for some other profession.

One key to overcoming the pressure of leading change is CONSISTENCY. You may not can control how well change is accepted or how fast it comes, because those variables depend on other people. The one thing you can influence during these seasons is your personal consistency. Doing what you say you will do or remaining steady in the face of failed plans earns you trust in the eyes of your followers. Change does not happen with good ideas, it happens with disciplined execution.  Be consistent to get the results you want.

Self-doubt

Self doubt is one of the most difficult hurdles to overcome in leadership. Self-doubt can become a persistent, powerful voice that holds us back from stepping out into our legacy! I talk with leaders about getting their “swagger” back or possessing a holy confidence. I believe every great leader possesses it! To get there, however, we have to overcome our tough self doubts.

How do you process your own insecurities while still leading every day? Get a coach! I can honestly not remember a time when I left a conversation with one of my coaches, when I did not come away inspired, encouraged, and more confident! I simply believe every leader needs a coach, for this, among many other reasons! Get a coach!

Can I can coach you a bit more? There are actually 3 Signs of Insecurity…and some ways to overcome them.

Lack of Growth

Seasons of growth aren’t called “seasons” by accident. Most leaders experience seasons with a lack of growth. It is a reality. Perhaps you’re experiencing slow or no growth right now. Be encouraged. You’re not the first leader to feel what you’re feeling and you won’t be the last. What I want you to do is use this season and be better on the other side of it.

Use this season to remind yourself WHY you do WHAT you do. This keeps your passion growing strong even if the results are growing slower. Most of WHAT we do is not all that sexy: meetings, spreadsheets, emails and events. WHY we do these makes all the difference. Passion and Urgency must rule the day to gain and maintain growth, so leverage this season to remember your WHY!

Another way I have coach leaders through these seasons is by helping them see some Reasons Organizations Stop Growing in the first place.

Fatigue

Most of our energy as leaders is focused on conquering the next hill, what it will take to grow our organization or how to better ourselves. Hear me, these things matter! But they do not matter at the expense of your health. The majority of the leaders I talk to are simply tired! Do you find yourself committed to just go through the motions to get through your day? Fatigue can be damaging to your life and leadership, as well as those in constant contact with you.

How do you manage fatigue when there is still so much to do? First, it’s ok to admit that you’re tired. One huge step beyond admission is to schedule and take at least one consistent day off! Stop making excuses why you can’t. Your leadership journey is a JOURNEY! If you’re going to make the trip, you have to pace your route. Block off a day a week that is guarded to only do things that bring you life and revive your soul.

Stress doesn’t stop. Your impact doesn’t need to either.

Momentum.

Every leader, team and organization wants it.

Yet, as much as it is sought after and worked for, Momentum often remains elusive.

The truth is…

Momentum does not come easily.

Momentum is not automatic.

Momentum is fragile.

Momentum is often a mystery.

While we can’t presume on momentum, we can be prepared for momentum.

Let’s talk about how?

Here are 3 ways leaders get prepared to experience momentum.  

#1 – Alignment

A staff only becomes a team when it becomes 100% aligned around the Vision & Values of the ministry or organization. 

Here’s our first challenge: Usually, there are one or two members on the team who tend to pull in their own direction. There are usually one or two team members who can’t keep up with the rest of the team.

Alignment requires courageous conversations and courageous decisions in these moments. It requires courage to lead.

#2 – Consistency

Great leaders and organizations practice what they preach.

Our key role is to be the culture we want to build.

In addition, we must also live the vision out consistently. Our lives, in addition to our voices, should clearly and consistently communicate the vision. 

We must also be committed to the blocking and tackling of leadership, remaining focused on the basics. Commit to do the little things well. If we can’t manage what we’ve got, why would God entrust us with more?

#3 – Urgency

Complacency is the # 1 gravitational force working against successful organizations.

The greatest threat to future success is current success. 

Every day we have to declare war on complacency and mediocrity and embrace urgency, because we cannot change what we’re willing to tolerate.

Here are 5 digital shifts that affect church growth:

1. Digital has become the New Normal

The new normal for many growing and multi-site churches is for people to watch the message on a video screen. The pastor preaches at one or maybe two services and the message is aired in other services or campuses on a big screen.

What was strange years ago, is now normal. We all consume large amounts of content on screens.

Younger adults have fully embraced a digital platform and are very comfortable watching the message digitally at a live service. This is revolutionary. Embracing the digital platform helps prevent burnout of the lead communicator (if you have multiple services) and allows for easier expansion to reach the community beyond the traditional 4 walls of the church building.

You may be asking, why would people attend a service to experience the message digitally? Great question.

Because they want a non-downloadable experience. People come for the community, live worship, kid’s ministry, relationships and to bring their friends.

Churches that understand that the platform has become digital are experiencing a reach that far extends the weekend services. The digital platform expands the reach of messages to thousands more online than those that walk through the doors of the building and can be re-lived and shared over and over again.

And online church is a front door. Many visitors watch online services for a few weeks to months before attending an actual service.

When you focus on the digital platform experience online, you can expand your reach which will, in turn, affect the growth of your live services.

2. Apps Aren’t Your Front Door. Websites Are.

With the invention of smartphones came the rise of apps.

There was a short trend that suggested church apps would completely replace church websites. It was similar to those saying email would die. But today, the opposite has happened.  Emails and websites are stronger than ever.

Surprisingly, nobody visits an app to check out a church. Why? Because they Google their question, and Google leads them to websites, not apps.

The venture through the church website creates a digital experience that allows the church to have a voice and speak into the person’s life or it repels them.

The website isn’t nearly as much for the congregation as it is for unchurched people who are searching for answers.

In today’s culture, the main purpose of the website is for the unchurched and the first-time visitor. Sure, your church website will have information for those in the church, but you could put that on an app (for attenders) or on the back pages of the site.

3. Right or Wrong, Decisions Get Made In Seconds

Digital decisions are lightning-fast decisions.

In a matter of seconds, you make decisions about whether to keep watching a video on YouTube or click away bringing the level of expectation higher than it’s ever been. Quality media is expected by those in your community for this reason.

Stopping the scroll goes beyond social media and translates into your church website.

When someone lands on your church website what do they think?

Your digital presence is sending a message from you that a generation is welcome or not welcome.  This message is not done in words but the actual design of your website.  Just like stopping the scroll, the decision is made in seconds.

Before they watch a message or read what your church is about, the website visitor has already made a snap judgment about the church. The decision is made visually and through the power of design.

How often do you buy a product at the grocery store for the package and you haven’t even tasted it?  You liked the packaging so that is the one you choose.  The other product may have tasted better, but you make a snap judgment based on the package.  Whether you buy it again, will depend on the taste, but trying it out was based on the brand packaging.

Today, people make a decision to visit your church because of your brand and design.  Your digital presence and design matter more than the building you meet in for services.

People have already made a decision about you before ever walking through your doors.  This changes the visitor experience and how you need to treat them in your services.

If the digital experience is one that greatly affects your weekend visitors at your services, it only makes sense to get digital right.

4. Outreach is Also Shifting to Digital-First

Some of you remember the days you would go door to door as a church to evangelize.

But today things have changed. Almost nobody knocks on doors anymore (except couriers) and when they do, it’s almost counter-productive. What if you could knock on every cell phone within 30 miles of your church?

The good news is you can through Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

You can literally reach your community digitally and single out those in need. Then with a simple follow-up strategy in place, you could call or meet face to face with those needing prayer for a personal tragedy.

Your church has the biggest opportunity in history to reach your community for Christ. But are you maximizing the digital platform of our church?

5. Rural and Urban Have Become More Equal

Digital and the internet has reshaped the world.

Even in rural communities, people have access to the same media as the big cities.  It’s flattened our experience and broken down divides that used to exist because of geography and culture. While there used to be a big gap based on location, the average kid in the country has the same access to YouTube and TikTok the average urban kid does.

What does this mean for the church?

Churches that are intentional about creative media will be the ones who are heard in the future. Most young millennial couples will be reluctant to share a post from their church that has an outdated design?

1. Ignoring digital disruption is a bad idea

Many churches and businesses are staring at their declining numbers and scratching their heads; totally dismissing the digital explosion happening around them.

The largest car service in the world owns zero cars.

The largest hotel industry in the world owns zero rooms.

The largest retail store in the world owns zero inventory.

It’s unwise to ignore what’s going on in today’s culture. In order to reach more people, the church has to work through what it looks like to engage a digital world.

2. Live experiences matter, but today’s culture calls for a screen-first mentality

Live experiences are absolutely relevant and matter, but don’t be limited to the boundaries of a building. The needs of people can’t be left to be met only on Sunday mornings or weekdays from 9 to 5.

There are very few places anyone goes in life prior to first visiting them on a screen. A quick search online is the first impression that can lead to continued online and physical engagement. Buildings can host a lot of people, but websites can reach so many more.

3. It’s hard to leverage digital touches with an analog mindset

The digital world and analog world need each other, because they fuel each other’s growth. We Amazon Prime some things and drive to a store to purchase others. Online and in-store go hand-in-hand and the same is proving true in churches who keep track of their online attenders. The more people watch church online, the more people engage in the church community.

The definition of attend is changing. It’s hard to keep track of how many people are engaged in your services online, but digital attendance needs to count in some way. Every church has to figure out a strategy for what to do after someone clicks on your site. What’s the pathway in place for them? Start with what you want to measure and build a strategy around it.

We live in a divided culture. Historically, it’s always been this way, but the tensions of the current climate have stirred up a great deal of fear in many Christians.

The easiest way to rid your life of difficult people is to kick them out or remove yourself from their paths, but the only person that serves is yourself and in the end, can lead to a callused, empty heart.

There’s nothing wrong with maintaining a healthy level of boundaries when it comes to protecting yourself (and in extreme cases, separation is absolutely necessary), but when you separate from people who are different than you, you are running away from the opportunity to be made more like Jesus. It’s a commitment you are called to make over and over again, because there’s always a chance that God can use you to make a change in the life of someone who needs Him.
