Who doesn’t love Mother’s Day? It is the one designated day when we get to pamper our moms andtry to thank them for just being so awesome! And it is almost that time of year again!

Did you know that Mother’s Day is the third most likely day– after Easter and Christmas – that people will attend church?

So, pastor, are you ready to celebrate all the wonderful mothers who will be attending your church services on Mother’s Day weekend? This year, why not go a step beyond a special prayer and time of blessing for mothers? We’ve put together five meaningful Mother’s Day ideas to help you bless their socks off:

Mother’s Day Greetings That Honor all Moms

Mother’s Day can mean different things to different people. For many it represents the celebration of life and great joy. For others it could be a reminder of a struggle or a mark of grief. Take care to ensure that you don’t honor some moms, while alienating others.Inan open letter to pastors {A non-mom speaks about Mother’s Day}, Amy Young paid a moving tribute to all moms. You could also consider sharing similar thoughts in your Mother Day’s greetings. Here is a glimpse of Amy’s poem that went viral:

“To those who gave birth this year to their first child – we celebrate with you

To those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you

To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you

To those who have disappointment, heartache, and distance with your children – we sit with you

This Mother’s Day, we walk with you.”

What other ways can you honor all mothers through your welcome speech?

Let’s Hear it From the Moms

Pick three or four mothers from your congregation and ask them to share their experiences of motherhood. It will be inspiring, encouraging and powerful to hear the real, honest struggles and joys of these mothers. These stories will be reassuring to other moms who might be facing similar struggles. And more importantly, they are bound to stir up new admiration and respect for the thankless job that moms do!

Get the Kids on Video

In the week leading up to Mother’s Day, take video clips of a few children thanking their moms and telling them what they love most about them. This will be especially great if your church is meeting online only.Surprise the moms by playing the video on Mother’s Day. Could a mom want anything more than knowing that her child loves her? This is going to be a tear-jerker. Get the tissues ready!

Teach Kids About Honoring Their Parents

Teach the kids what it really means to honor their mother and father and why it is important. Practice scripture memorization such as Colossians 3:20 “Children obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord” and Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

The moms are definitely going to appreciate that! Wrap up by getting the kids to make Mother’s Day cards or crafts they can give to their mothers to have as a keepsake.

What other practical examples can you use to teach kids to obey and honor their parents?

Get a Space for Kids That Will Make Moms Happy

What could mothers want more than a safe and fun environment for their kids? At Portable Church, we take the children’s area very seriously. We have helped many mobile churches set upsecure and comfortable children’s spacesin different venues, including a school gymnasium and a movie theater!

Mothers want to know that their children are safe, happy and entertained. When we helped achurch in New York move into a movie theater,it turned out to be the ideal venue for their kids’ ministry. We converted the theater into a kid-friendly church by transforming three theater areas into fun and safe environments for different age-groups. The moms loved it!

Are your children’s areas fun, spacious and secure?

Do you have any other Mother’s Day ideas for churches? We hope that you can really bless all the moms that attend your church this year.

Do You Need a Preaching Calendar?

By New Churches Team

As a pastor, you may be planning your sermons just a week or two at a time. But are you interested in planning a year ahead? Here is a step-by-step guide to do that.

How to Start

There are a lot of different ways to create a yearly preaching calendar. It’s important to look at how different people recommend doing this to figure out what works best for you. But to start, consider having a 2-year broad vision. This should likely include 2/3 exposition and 1/3 thematic or topical sermons. Now think in terms of four blocks. Use two blocks in the first year and in the second year to plan out your expository sermons. Consider alternating between a New Testament series and an Old Testament series. Choose the books you cover based on the needs of your church.

Choose your books of the Bible two years out, but look at the thematic series one year out to see what your church needs at that time. The period from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day is a great time to plan a family series. You can break up long expository series with mini-thematic series or with holiday sermons.

Length of Series

It’s no surprise that people’s attention spans are shorter now than they used to be. So, what is an appropriate length for a sermon series? Eight to 10 sermons is an ideal length. You don’t want people to get exhausted by being in one book of the Bible forever. You want it to be faithful to the text, Biblically-delivered, and easy for people to get their mind around. It can be easier to deliver in chunks that people can digest, that are broken up with thematic sermons.

Doctrinal Teaching

Doctrinal teaching fits into thematic preaching. If you are doing expository sermons half of the time, plan to preach thematically on holidays and include an on-ramp series in the fall and spring to provide easy access to new people. That doesn’t leave you with a lot of other Sundays, so doctrinal teaching might be best covered in another setting like a small group or discipleship class. That allows you to go deeper in a smaller setting.

Simply put, what they proved is that this effect causes people to overestimate their knowledge or ability, particularly in areas where they have little or no experience. [ref]

In psychology, the term “cognitive bias” refers to beliefs that many of us have, without realizing that we have them. Cognitive biases are like blind spots. They’re built into our thought patterns and if we don’t identify them and intentionally think about our thinking, they end up impacting the way we live and lead.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well and we can see it all over the place and in churches. Here are some examples of when the Dunning-Kruger effect is at play within your church:

When the senior pastor gets worked up about the latest trend and pulls the kids’ ministry team in to tell them how they must move forward. All the while, the kids’ ministry team are aware of the latest trends. Here, the senior pastor flexes power and for various reasons, this simply doesn’t work. When the youth pastor gives glib parenting advice to parents, thinking they know a lot after studying at bible college for one and a half years. It’s when the executive pastor continuously questions why the worship team members need to drink so much coffee when they meet! ?

In these examples, one person applies expertise from their area to an area that they do not have sufficient experience in.

Can you see it now? Essentially, the Dunning-Kruger effect explains a bias we have in our thoughts. We are unaware of how badly we grasp a new subject. We’re oblivious to the fact that we are failing at it. We mistakenly think that we are doing as well as “average” or even “above average”. People who know precious little about a subject think that they know more than they actually do.

You might see this in your personal life. For example, are you always running five minutes late for meetings? This could be the Dunning-Kruger effect at work in your life because you overestimate your ability to organize your day in such a way that enables you to be on time. Or we see it in the lives of politicians when they make declarative statements about things they know nothing about. In fact, it seems like there’s an entire cottage industry of politicians living in that way!

One of the difficulties with the Dunning-Kruger effect is that it’s so easy to see in other people but it’s incredibly difficult to see it at work in our own lives. We have great clarity when leaders and others around us are out over their skis and talking about something that they simply don’t have any experience in or knowledge of.

It can be “fun” to reflect on your own leadership and identify times when the Dunning-Kruger effect was in place. It’s a humbling experience for sure! There are several instances I can look back on and see where the effect was at work within my leadership.

Early in my ministry, I remember watching people who spoke publicly, teaching pastors and lead pastors, and I thought, “Wow, that seems fun! I could do that.” In my first decade of ministry, I had multiple opportunities to speak at The Meeting House, where Bruxy Cavey is the lead pastor. Bruxy is an incredible communicator, one of the best in North America, and I thought that what he does wouldn’t be too hard to replicate. Well, was I schooled! I realized that connecting with an audience is incredibly tricky. Finding a content connection that is both biblically sound and draws people in is difficult to achieve!

One of the unique things about The Meeting House is to this day, they have an open forum Q&A session at the end of every talk, which Bruxy makes look super easy. He has done this for decades. I still remember the first Sunday that I opened my session up for Q&A and all I will say is that humility and respect washed over me.

Ever since, I’ve championed teaching pastors and continuously try and find a way for them to have more space for creating and planning what they do.

Potentially, The Dunning-Kruger Effect may harm your church because we could make uninformed decisions, which may result in damaging our church. Dunning-Kruger leads to church leaders making unwise decisions and potentially pointing their church in a harmful direction.

I encourage you to read more about this cognitive bias and understand how it may be impacting your leadership team. I think you’ll start to see its presence as you learn more about it. There are many ways that our biases impact the way we serve. But here are a few ways that you could fight against The Dunning-Kruger Effect:

5 Ways to Overcome The Dunning-Kruger Effect in Your Leadership Team

Model Questioning Yourself // When was the last time you verbalized to your team that you weren’t entirely sure about a new area that you were venturing into? Rather than projecting machismo and trying to convince those around you that you know best, slow down and model that you still have questions. Let your team know that there are areas you need to learn about before you step into something new. Cultivate your ability to identify the areas that are outside of your expertise and verbalize to your team that you need to explore the new area before stepping into it. Learn what you’re best at and lead from that spot.Strategic Outsiders // At a more macro level, as your church is looking to take a step in a new direction, your instinct should be to engage with strategic outsiders. This may be a consultant; someone whose profession is to help churches like yours in a particular area. It could also be an informal gathering of half a dozen other church leaders who you know have been through the transition that you’re about to go through and ask them for lessons. Cultivate the curiosity within you and keep explore the topic deeply. As you get in behind the leadership of the largest and fastest-growing churches in the country, you realize that they are consistently using strategic outsiders to help them make wise decisions as they step into the future.Regular Performance Feedback // Giving your team members consistent feedback around their performance is an important factor in reducing Dunning-Kruger’s impact on your church. Please don’t reserve giving feedback to your team only for when things have gone horribly wrong. The best practice would be to find a way to give both positive and negative feedback weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. For weekly feedback, you could use a tool like 15Five. You could use a tool like Leadr for your one-on-one conversations, but the most important point here is to give consistent feedback to your team, to help them understand those areas that they need to improve in. Even a little bit of consistent feedback will reduce Dunning-Kruger’s impact on your leadership.Default to Trusting Your Team // Can we have an honest conversation for a minute? When you think about the work that your team’s doing, do you naturally default to trusting them or do you find it difficult to give things up, to let it go, and to have them lead? As leaders, our default setting needs to be asking questions rather than answering them. Think about the last 10 conversations you had with your team. Did you position yourself as a question-answerer or the question-asker? Position your leadership coming from a place of humility and give up the reins to your team. Allow your team to lead, make mistakes, and hopefully find the areas where Dunning-Kruger impacts them. This should result in them realizing the need to seek input from others.Think About Thinking // Finally, an important skill for all leaders is to develop our metacognition. This is just a fancy word for saying that we need to think about how we think regularly. We need to process what’s happening on the inside. This can happen through counseling, being challenged by external ideas, reading, and listening to interviews. Even just spending some time journaling can help you! Metacognition is an important skill for us to cultivate as we attempt to lead in a thoughtful way. It will push our church forward. Thinking about thinking helps us resist Dunning-Kruger’s impact in our lives and we may find a way to cultivate it into our leadership.

Leaders who will win the future are curious and humble. Cultivating those two “superpowers” will help you lead at a higher level as we move forward.

Looking for more help with The Dunning-Kruger Effect in your leadership?

I recently finished reading Adam Grant’s book “Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know” and this book gives all kinds of vivid examples of The Dunning-Kruger Effect and how organizations have overcome it.

It would be well worth your investment to either read or listen to this book and process it with your leadership team. It’s an accessible book that will help your wrestle through how we need to reinvent everything we do in ministry.

It seems like we’re living in an age where all our ministries and organizations need to think again about what we do and how we do it, especially as s we continue to step through COVID-19. This book is incredibly timely as Grant provides not only great anecdotes but lots of meta-analyses that helps us think about thinking.

10 Steps to Effective Easter Preparation

By New Churches Team

Easter is one of the most important times of the year in the life of the church. Biblically speaking it is when Christ arose. But also, in terms of reaching visitors and unchurched people, there is not a better time of year. It’s important to be prepared for that. Here are ten steps to help you as you prepare for Easter.

Decide on the times of your services.

Are you going to add any additional services or are you sticking with your regular schedule? Decide as early as possible to help your church prepare.

Decide on the specials that will occur.

Are you going to use special curriculum in Sunday School? Are you going to offer any special programs for first-time guests? Are you going to do anything special in your kids ministry?

Get the website ready.

This is very important. Most newcomers check out your website before they ever come to your church. Think through the website. Do you need to do a countdown, evites, a button, or a banner? Highlight Easter as early as possible so people can start talking about it.

Create a promo package.

Your promo package could be branding the Easter service or Easter week or the weeks leading up to Easter. Put that branding on postcards, emails, invite cards, social media, and on your website.

Train your people.

Train ushers, Sunday School teachers, small group leaders, and anyone who might encounter guests. It’s important that they know what to expect and how to help when newcomers attend Easter Sunday.

Plan a service that is comfortable.

Hold as normal as a service as possible. Easter Sunday needs to look pretty close to a normal Sunday so that guests know what to expect and feel comfortable coming back.

Give familiar service elements.

Singing “Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace” works well on Easter Sunday. Don’t be afraid of being traditional. It’s important that guests are able to connect with something that is familiar to them. If service elements are unique and harder to understand, take the time to explain them. Let them know why you are doing what you are doing.

Give information about the church.

Put in guests’ hands a bulletin or brochure that points them to the website or social media where they can get more information after they leave. Newcomers want to know who you are and what you stand for.

Tell guests what’s next.

If you have a series, special event, or vibrant ministry that they shouldn’t miss, highlight it. Let them know what’s coming up and important in your church.

Follow up with visitors.

This may require a special team of volunteers, but it is critically important that you follow up with Easter visitors. Make a bigger deal out of it than you do regularly.

Launching a Preview Service

By New Churches Team

It’s time for your first preview service. But who should you invite and how should you advertise? What should your preview services look like? Here are some tips for how to handle these three areas of your preview services.

Advertising

While you can begin to advertise with your first preview service, do not spend all of your advertising budget right away. Use a small amount to advertise the first service, then more with each additional service. By the time you get to your fourth service, be prepared to go all out for advertising. In between the preview weeks, reach out to your community with block parties and other events to funnel them into your service.

Invitations

For your first initial preview service, consider keeping it to just your launch team. They will give you a lot of grace as you work through some of the bumps that come along with that initial run through. For the next service, encourage them to invite friends and family. Continue asking these people to attend every preview service you have. This repetitive invitation and opportunity to be a part of something new often leads to a good response.

Service

Prepare your sermons ahead of time. The weeks of preview services you want to be mobilizing your launch team, holding block parties, and raising awareness of your church. You don’t want to spend your time hyper-focused on your sermons. Knock that out early.

Do as much of your normal service as possible. Do not invite outside people to lead worship. Acknowledge that it is a preview service at the beginning and at the end, but in the middle keep it to what your worship service will traditionally look like.

Applying the 70/20/10 Learning Principle to Church

By New Churches Team

The 70/20/10 Adult learning principle describes the following: 70% of learning is accomplished by doing (on the job, trial and error); 20% of learning is accomplished through informal feedback (mentoring, learning by interaction); and 10% of learning is accomplished by listening (conferences, seminars, classes, formal education). According to this principle, the primary way we learn is by doing and interaction, not by listening.

Are We Doing Sunday Morning Services Wrong?

If Sunday morning services are primarily listening, are we doing it wrong? The principle states that 10% of learning is listening. That means that an important piece of learning still comes through listening. Classes and sermons all have a role because we are learning something new through them. But then we need to interact with what we’ve learned, process it, and internalize it. When it comes to Sunday, there is something unique and powerful about the Word of God being preached.

Discipleship training isn’t decided completely by Sunday morning experiences though. In the Christian life, it’s good to have time together to worship the Lord and study the Bible so that then you can live it out, life on life, shoulder to shoulder. When you are serving the poor, ministering to your neighbor, and sharing the gospel, those are also ways you learn. If your Christian experience boiled down to sitting in a room, singing, and listening to a pastor, that would be problematic. However, most people in church life spend more time in relationships than in church service.

Avoiding Transactional Church Experiences

A big church can become transactional if you aren’t careful, but most churches spend time and energy to make sure people don’t see that Sunday morning service as their only Christian experience. It’s important to have the 70, the 20, and the 10. So, what does it look like within the Sunday morning gathering to have examples of the 70 and 20? During a sermon series, invite the congregation to come forward and respond in some way. That’s active participation.

Preaching is not the only thing that matters, but it does deeply matter.
