Lead to Win

Are you a leader who wants proven, practical advice to guide you through the complexities of leadership today? If so, you’ve got to listen to my friends, Michael Hyatt and Megan Hyatt Miller’s podcast, Lead to Win. It’s one of the best podcasts for getting practical leadership wisdom.

On it, Michael and Megan share from their experience of more than 40 years of professional experience leading teams and driving results. They’ve been where you are. And they have the insights and strategies to help you where you are today. One of my favorite things about their podcast is that it’s not just strategies to grow your business, though they have plenty of that. They’re about helping you prioritize The Double Win, where you win at work and succeed at life.

Search for Lead to Win wherever you get your podcasts. Subscribe, and you’ll get weekly leadership lessons to help you build the Double Win!

5 Surprising Characteristics that Separate Great Leaders from Other Leaders by Carey Nieuwhof

3 INSIGHTS FROM BOB

1. Choose your battles

In 25 years of law, Bob never lost a case. That’s crazy good. You would think that means he is a really great lawyer (which he is), but Bob gives more credit to his ability as a picker rather than his ability as a lawyer. He won’t take cases he doesn’t think he can win. He applies this principle to the rest of his life, as well.

Bob has noticed that most people are quick to engage in arguments that they probably won’t win. You probably do as well. Those arguments just aren’t worth your time. Wouldn’t it be so much better if you focused on the conversations and efforts in your life that will actually go somewhere? If you want to win, choose your arguments.

2. Minor setbacks can be a sign of deeper issues

While at his cabin, Bob does this thing called “water logging” where he looks out over the water for a valuable log that has been left by a tug-boat, sitting vertically in the water. Usually only a few inches of the log is above the water, so Bob finds these massive logs by looking first for the seagulls that perch on them.

He points out that many major issues and opportunities for growth in our lives are like those logs. They go deep into our subconscious but are barely visible from the surface. Maybe you have a bit of frustration or anxiety that bubbles up, but there might be a deep wound causing it. If you want to get better, you need to unearth those problems.

3. Dreams come in all sizes, so dream big

If you want to chase your dreams, you need to look deeper than just asking, “What do I want?” Ask yourself, “Why do I want it?” And, if the reason you want something is healthy, go after it! Bob recommends that you take action on your courageous dreams now. Write the letter, make the ask, do what you can today to start it.

Your dream won’t always be a career dream. Sometimes a dream is a meeting, an event, or a relationship in your life. One of Bob’s dreams is to be an amazing grandpa, and he will be chasing that dream forever. Another of his dreams was tea with the Queen of England, so he sent her a letter! Your ambitions come in small, medium, and large sizes. Bob would love for you to pursue all of them.

Do you want to unlock more of your potential in life and leadership without sacrificing time with your family and your health?

Sounds crazy, but it’s not. I know because I’ve lived it. A few years back, I seriously crashed and burned because the demands on my time and life were bigger than the time I had to accomplish them. I promised myself that wouldn’t happen again.

Today, I still have bigger goals than ever before, but I’ve made fundamental changes that have led to a healthier, happier lifestyle without sacrificing my family and vastly increasing my productivity at work. I’ve taken what I’ve learned during this journey and put it into The High Impact Leader course.

You can complete the three-hour course at your own pace. It’s the most comprehensive content I’ve ever created for leaders to help you reclaim HOURS every day so you can become more effective at work and more present at home. When your time, energy, and priorities are all working together for you, it’ll impact everything you do.

You become a better leader, because you’re doing what you do best when you’re at your best
You become a better spouse, because you’re focused at home
You become a better parent, neighbor, and friend, because you actually have time off to relax and engage

These principles will free you to thrive in every area of your life.

You can learn more and gain instant access today.

by Brandon Cox: Have you heard about Nathan Patterson? Here’s the scoop…

Nathan played baseball in high school, but upon graduation, moved on to more practical things like selling software for a living. After all, how many high school hopefuls actually make it to “the show?”

Then he attended a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field. He stepped up to one of those booths where you can throw your fastest pitch for a radar and threw a 96-mph fastball!

That fastball wound launching his professional baseball career. The Oakland A’s signed him to a contract and he made his minor league debut for their Arizona affiliate on August 15, 2019 and struck out the side!

There’s another piece of the story, though. Nathan had been continuing to work out, practice, and try to get the attention of major league recruiters. Even when he’d broken his other wrist in a car accident, Nathan kept throwing.

Here’s the thing… There are moments when you simply need to step up and throw your best pitch.

Up until that moment, you do the hard work of preparing, practicing, and keeping the dream alive. And when that moment comes, you put your whole heart into it. You put it all on the line.

Think about David heading into the valley with his five smooth stones, or Peter standing up on the day of Pentecost to preach the church’s first sermon, or Billy Graham scheduling his first tent crusade, or Rick and Kay Warren moving to southern California with all of their possessions to start a church that would change the world.

Think about what God has put in your heart to do. It may be writing a book, or landing a promotion, or adopting a child, but this much is true – you’ll have to take some big steps along the way. The moment will come when you’ll need to step up and throw your best pitch yet.

by Brandon A. Cox: I’m afraid it’s all too common for people to have huge aspirations about who they want to become in the future, but almost no plan or willingness to get there.

We love the idea of changing the world, but we fail to see that changing the world starts with making a difference in my own personal world – my own heart, the lives of those close to me, and then the lives of those with whom I find myself in close proximity.

When I started Bible college, I could only focus on two things. First, I wanted badly to marry the woman of my dreams, so I proposed to her about a month into our freshman year and she said yes. We were married the next summer.

Second, I wanted to pastor a church. I didn’t care how big or small or how far I had to drive – I just wanted a pulpit of my own to preach from every week. That came true too. At the ripe old age of 19, I was married and serving as the pastor of a little church an hour from our home.

Both of those dreams came to pass after a series of steps. I first asked Angie out on a date. Repeatedly. And I learned how to take rejection when she said no about a hundred times. Finally her Mom convinced her to give me a shot and the rest is history. We dated. We got engaged. We planned a wedding and found an apartment.

When I wanted to preach every weekend but didn’t have a church, I approached a professor about referring me for fill-in opportunities. I walked to a nursing home near campus each week and gathered a bunch of sweet older folks and would lead them in a Bible study. Eventually, I filled in at a church full of older people and they asked me to be their Pastor.

Now, we’re planting a church, and it’s a big dream! We started with a vision and a name, “Grace Hills.” We knew we’d plant in northwest Arkansas but aside from one other family, we had no idea who would be part of it. We networked and spread the word and gathered 30 people in an office.

We charted out a timeline for the first six months, serving the community on some Sundays and meeting for a Bible study on the others. Then we had some preview services and 70-ish of us launched publicly in a movie theater. We grew and moved, grew and hired staff, grew and planted churches out of ourselves and sent missionaries around the world.

Baby steps.

Something is first. Then something is next. And the dream becomes reality a piece at a time. A life of influential leadership happens the same way Johnny Cash built his Cadillac – “one piece at a time.”

If you want to be a published author, start writing.

If you want to grow an online platform, start learning how to do it well.

If you want to be a CEO, get your MBA and a job and climb the ladder. And maybe start by mastering LinkedIn.

If you want to be the President of the United States, get involved in politics locally and then run for a state office or congressional seat.

All of this may seem obvious, but I see it all the time – people with dreams, with potential, with talent and even good friends, but they’re so focused on the end goal, they don’t take the next little step.

We want to lead. We want a platform. We want influence. But often, we fail to figure out what the next best step is and go for it. I’m somewhere on the journey. I haven’t arrived and not all of my aspirations have come true yet, but I’m also determined to find the next step and to take it with bold faith.

And by the way, here’s an important warning: Never let your dream become an idol. We find our identity and our worth in how God created us, what Jesus did for us on the cross, and who we are as born again children of God. God Himself is the ultimate prize, not success. Nonetheless, leading and dreaming are still vital to the expansion of God’s Kingdom. So…

If you really aspire to lead, start leading right now. Lead those around you at work. Lead your kids and your family. Lead your fellow students. Get out of the box and get engaged. Something is bound to happen!

So tell me, what’s yo’ dream?? And where are you in the journey right now?
