by Brandon Cox: I remember a professor in college once asking our class, does a peach tree bear peaches because it’s a peach tree? Or is it a peach tree because it bears peaches?

And who cares? Far more importantly…

When led by selfishness, you’ll bear the fruit of the flesh. When led by the Spirit, you’ll bear the fruit of the Spirit.

And just as importantly, you can’t have it both ways.

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

~ Galatians 5:17 NIV

The Apostle Paul gives us a lengthy list of examples of the kind of fruit we bear when we’re driven by selfish desire rather than the Spirit’s influence, “being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, [20] worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, [21] feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like these.” (Galatians 5:19-21 NCV)

And then he gives us another list, the well-known and much beloved fruit of the Spirit, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…” (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)

I like to think of these two ways of living in terms of our nature. When I’m living a naturally natural life, things go badly. But when I’m living a supernaturally natural life, I bear sweet fruit. I say “supernaturally natural” because when you’re filled with the Spirit (a supernatural influence operating within you), you will naturally bear the Spirit’s fruit.

In other words, when you’re filled with the Spirit, bearing the Holy Spirit’s fruit is like second nature. It just comes from you because it’s who you are on the inside.

That’s why it’s important to note that these are not the “fruits” of the Spirit (plural), as though there is a list of nine specific possible outcomes, some of which you may or may not bear on a given day, but rather these nine traits, taken together, are the “fruit” (singular) of the Spirit. When you’re Spirit-filled, you become spiritually fruitful in a multitude of ways.

The fruit of the Spirit is definitely not a list of activities to try to do in your own power. Rather the fruit of the Spirit is simply the natural product of living in tune with, filled with, and in submission to the influence of the Spirit of God, moment by moment.

by Brandon Cox: My nine-year-old asked me the other day, “If I ask Santa for a laptop, he’ll get me one, right?” To which I simply replied, “Probably not.”

Some of us view God as a sort of genie in the sky, ready to shower down gifts and presents on us whenever we ask, even if what we’re asking for isn’t for our good or God’s glory.

At the same time, just as many of us believe an opposite error – that God isn’t much of a giver and isn’t interested in answering our prayers for the things we need.

But here’s what the Bible says to those who believe in him…

Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus-all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts!

Ephesians 1:3 TPT

Let’s just break this down…

Every… Not just a handful of the things you’ll need, but every blessing you will need.

Spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm… It’s possible you didn’t even know you needed some invisible, spiritual, supernatural resources. But God knows your needs better than you do.

Has already been lavished upon us… It’s past tense. In Christ, you’ve already been given everything you need at your deepest level. And that word, lavished, is such a beautiful word. It’s been poured out upon you in great measure.

Because he sees us wrapped into Christ… God doesn’t give you good things because you’re good. He gives you heavenly things because you trust in his Son, Jesus, and therefore you’re wrapped up in him. You are robed, entirely by grace, with the very righteousness of Christ.

So everything that you really need, on a spiritual, supernatural level, has already been lavished upon you because God is a giver, because God loves his Son, and because God loves you.

When you need hope, you’ll find it in the heavenly realm, which is accessible by prayer. When you need peace, or joy, or purpose, or security, or anything else, it’s already available in the throneroom of God.

So, what do you need today?

Notable Changes

by Splink: Play a little game to see if your kids can pick out the change each one makes in their appearance. Ask each person to find a partner and look carefully at one another. Then have them turn their back and make a simple change. (It can be as simple as putting a strand of hair behind their ear or rolling up a sleeve.) When they turn around, see if their partner can tell what has been changed. Pick new partners and play a few more rounds.

Was it hard or easy to see the change?

Could someone tell by your behavior that you are a follower of Christ?

The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible and He can use that to help you know the right way to live. Every time you say no to your own selfish way and yes to the Holy Spirit, you change.

Slow Change

Do a simple experiment to show change. Gather some white carnations (one per child) or celery (also works), a glass half-filled with water for each carnation, food coloring (red, blue, and green) and a knife.

Directions:

Fill each glass about half way up with water.
Add food coloring to each glass, about 10-20 drops to make a vibrant color. (More is better!)
Cut each stem at an angle and place it in the glass.
Check the carnations every few hours to see if anything is happening. (You might see some results in as little as two or three hours, but it may take up to a day to see full results.)

What made the change in the color of the flower? (The food coloring we put into the water.) Something was added to the water to make a change.

How can we change? In order for us to change and do the right things, we need God’s help. When the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us, He will change us. It’s a slow process, but as we obey Him and His words in the Bible, we will be become more like Jesus.

Changed

When you’re eating dinner, think of and talk about the changes in food/drink. Ask, What food changes when it is cooked or frozen? For example, spaghetti or macaroni noodles are hard (and inedible), but when cooked, they become soft and yummy! (Other ideas: water to ice, koolaid to popsicles, most vegetables become soft when cooked; etc.)

Read Galatians 5:22-23. The Holy Spirit will change us. We will still look the same on the outside, but He changes us on the inside to be more loving, peaceful, joyful, gentle, humble, and self-controlled. Ask for His help every day.
