If you’re not familiar with YouTube culture, you might not have heard of MrBeast.

Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast) is the top content creator on the platform for 2020, and he’s super engaging. Over the years, he’s produced some amazingly creative content that has earned him over 54 million subscribers and all kinds of awards. He struck viral gold in January 2017 when he posted a video of himself counting to 100,000 that was viewed tens of thousands of times in just a few days. That might seem like a strange start, but it gained him a lot of notoriety and launched him into the stratosphere of YouTubers.

In December 2020, MrBeast launched MrBeast Burger, a restaurant chain with 300 locations, and he did it all in one day. To put that in context, his restaurant chain is similar in size to Shake Shack, Smashburger, or In-N-Out Burger. However, those burger chains took years to achieve the size and clout that MrBeast Burger accomplished in a single day.

The unique spin that MrBeast brings to the burger business is that his 300 locations are completely virtual. The food is prepared by existing restaurants, ordered online, and delivered by third-party delivery services. MrBeast launched a MrBeast Burger app that provides relatively seamless ordering, payment, and delivery options. This is an astonishing achievement for any organization, and it provides all kinds of lessons for your church and my church as we think about what comes next in the life of our communities.

Obviously, MrBeast, being a YouTuber, launched his new burger restaurant with an amazing video. Jimmy and his team rented an actual restaurant for just a single day and gave away burgers, fries, and drinks. They gave away more than just their new, delectable food, however. On opening day, they gave away cash, computers, and even a car! This launch video has become a viral hit, and it is well worth your time to watch it and get a sense of the enormous scale of what MrBeast is doing.

On launch day, the line of cars trying to get to the restaurant was 20 miles long. In fact, the line was so long that police eventually had to close down the restaurant because of all of the traffic problems it was creating in this North Carolina town.

MrBeast Burger is more than just an interesting fad or a YouTube story that came and went. It provides some lessons for our churches as we look to the future and think about the development of our ministries. Here are six lessons from the launch of MrBeast Burger that you can apply to your church.

Online and In Person // Leveraging the Best of The One to Make the Other Better!

It’s fascinating to watch these online celebrities and digital businesses push into the in-person world.

MrBeast Burger represents an interesting hybrid because it is clearly an online digital platform but it delivers an actual in-person experience.

Although I’m excited about all the digital innovation that’s happened over the last year or so, as we look to the future, we also need to consider how our in-person experience is going to be impacted by all that we’ve been learning online.

Rather than trapping ourselves in a false dichotomy of online versus in-person, how can we recognize the hybrid nature of our experiences? We obviously don’t live in a purely online world, and our offline world is increasingly injected with digitally connected technology. How can we find a unique combination of the two that acknowledges the world we live in?

I’m struck by Peloton when I think about this question. Earlier this year, Peloton commented in an investor call that, even though they’ve seen such strong sales online due to the pandemic, they have continued to be committed to their in-person locations. [ref] They recognize that the need to connect in person is not going away any time soon.

Rather than trapping ourselves in a false dichotomy of online versus in-person, how can we recognize the hybrid nature of our experiences? – @richbirchClick To Tweet

Audience Building // Who is Following Along With Your Church’s Story?

MrBeast didn’t spend any money on Facebook ads, direct mail, or any other paid media. Think about that for a minute. It’s astonishing, really.

He turned his sizeable audiences on to his concept, and it launched rapidly. This is an important lesson for our churches. Audience building is core to MrBeast Burger’s business. In their case, that means building YouTube subscribers, Instagram followers, and an email list that they can reconnect with over time to keep drawing fans into their business. Even the decision to launch their own app rather than rely on third-party delivery apps indicates their interest in connecting and communicating with their audience.

Our churches need to be thinking about the ever-increasing audience around our ministries.

Years ago, Rick Warren explained that churches have five “circles of commitment”—community, crowd, congregation, committed, and core. As church leaders, we are aiming to move people from the community to the core. However, there is a larger halo of people outside of the “community” that we need to build strategies to stay connected with. These are people who are aware of us but maybe attended only a service or two in the last year. Or maybe they downloaded content that they found helpful from the church’s website.

How can we capture this group of people’s contact information so that we can keep them connected over time and eventually move them closer and closer to our ministries?

Audience building needs to be part of our strategy as we look into the future. Effective ministries have always made space for people to belong to the community first without requiring them to behave in a certain way. Audience building allows us to do that at scale—to have a wide variety of people in the general orbit of our ministry who we hope will eventually connect in a more substantial way.

Effective ministries have always made space for people to belong to the community first without requiring them to behave in a certain way. – @richbirchClick To Tweet

Partnership Potentials // Working Together For a Better Future.

It’s fascinating to me that a YouTuber struck up relationships with hundreds of restaurants all across the country to make his food and that third-party companies he’s never met will deliver for him. Talk about effective partnership building!

A partnering restaurant might be a local Italian place or a hometown burger joint. MrBeast Burger is focusing their efforts on marketing while relying on third-party organizations to ultimately deliver the food, meaning online delivery services cover the last mile to connect the restaurant and its customers.

It’s a fairly seamless experience that creates all kinds of value along the chain. Restaurants all across the country have seen a boost in business because of their connection with MrBeast Burger.

In the future, there may be new opportunities for us to work together as churches across the country in a similar way.

We’ve often drawn strong lines between our churches. However, one thing that we’ve seen pretty clearly during COVID is that churchgoers don’t necessarily hold to those lines. A person may attend Sunday morning services at one church, engage in weekly Bible study at another, listen to worship music from a third, and maybe even reach out to a fourth for some other kind of assistance.

As we look to the future, can we dream up creative new approaches to partnership that will ultimately propel our ministries forward, reach more people, and connect them with the teachings of Jesus?

Authenticity Keeps Winning // Is There a Higher Cultural Value Than Excellence?

If you don’t normally spend time on YouTube or engage with vloggers, you might be slightly put off by how much authenticity these personalities exhibit.

So much of this content is behind the scenes and isn’t pretty or polished. This authenticity draws the community in even more. People want to engage when they see folks who are doing something online that is real and maybe just a little bit gritty.

This was exhibited in the early days of MrBeast Burger, when there were, understandably, a few complaints about some of the burgers. Rather than hiding behind corporate statements, MrBeast himself took to the airwaves and spoke publicly about the challenges of opening a restaurant chain overnight, committing to improving the warmth of the burgers and the crispiness of the crinkle cut fries.

This has spawned an incredible amount of community content. In response to the complaints, people are now posting videos and photos to show off their freshly delivered burgers and celebrate an amazing meal.

All of this authenticity, ultimately, is more endearing to MrBeast’s fans.

We’ve said it before, and we will definitely say it again. Behind-the-scenes content that draws your community into the production is key when it comes to creating great social media content for your church today. If you’re launching new projects in the weeks and months ahead, how can you show people the process behind the scenes? How can you let them in on what you’re doing?

Don’t hide behind a fake “quality” veneer. Show some authenticity. Let people know what it actually takes to do what you do as a church.

Don’t hide behind a fake “quality” veneer. Show some authenticity. Let people know what it actually takes to do what you do as a church. – @richbirchClick To Tweet

Community Service as a Growth Strategy // They Think It’s a “Good Thing” … We Know It’s a God Thing!

A core part of MrBeast Burger’s offering is a “buy one, give one” strategy.

We’ve seen this with TOMS Shoes and many other brands over the years. The idea is that a portion of sales will actually go to feeding people in the communities where orders are placed. Based on comments online and the way people talk about MrBeast Burger, this is clearly an important part of the appeal of this new restaurant. It doesn’t just make great burgers—it actually helps other people.

Our churches are called to make a difference in the lives of our community. Rather than hiding this away in some committee or as a sub-point on a strategic plan, community service needs to be seen as a part of your growth strategy. Time and again we’ve seen the draw of churches that focus on getting their people out of their seats and into the streets. And obviously, this kind of community service is not just good for your image in the community—it’s a God thing.

Narrow the Focus for a Bigger Impact // Simple Church is Still The Best Path Forward.

Take a look at the MrBeast Burger menu. It has just a few items. In comparison to the McDonald’s around the corner from you, MrBeast Burger has a much narrower focus, and it’s hard at work improving the quality of what it delivers.

This small menu gives them the ability to focus on a few items and do them well.

Remember Simple Church? The idea is that churches should do only a few things and do them well in order to have more impact. Clarity. Movement. Alignment. Focus. Work on those things that move people closer to the mission and strip everything else away.

There was a time when churches would actually brag about how many services or ministries they had. “We have 102 services at our church!” However, we’ve seen all kinds of evidence that simple church is the way for our churches to grow and reach the people in our communities.

One of my fears as we come out of COVID and its impact on our churches with the addition of a robust online ministry is that our churches will become increasingly complex and we will lose this power of being a simple church.

What can we remove from our church today to make us more effective tomorrow?

We need to cut back on things that don’t push the mission forward. What areas of our ministry are not effective? What projects are holding us back and siphoning resources? Now would be a perfect time for us to trim those things away so that we can focus our effort and energy on the aspects of our ministry that push us closer to our mission.

What can we remove from our church today to make us more effective tomorrow? – @richbirchClick To Tweet

The Church Is Not the Building

By John Muzyka

Before you commit to lease or purchase a facility, it is imperative that you get CLARITY on who you are and what your ministry is called to do. Doing the groundwork to define your mission, vision, and values is an important first step before pursuing real estate. The next step is to understand your CAPACITY. Capacity is not only your financial capacity but also the market capacity. Market capacity defines what it costs to rent, lease, or purchase a facility in your target area. Learning to optimize the temporary facility and operate in a way that will allow you to set aside funds for a future space will position the church to secure a facility…if a facility is a part of your strategy.

When people join a church that meets in a temporary facility, they often look forward to the day their church will have a permanent building to call home. They see the set up and tear down “phase” as simply a phase and are often anxiously awaiting a building. This is not just limited to the people; the planter often feels that getting a facility shows that the church has arrived. As a “Church Real Estate Agent” I had this view to some extent. Everything I did drove the church to a facility or a building. However, I now have a new approach—coaching the planter to challenge what facility they think they need as it relates to their CLARITY and their CAPACITY. Below are stories of three churches and how they are reaching their target area without owning a facility.

Church in the Center (CITC) in Houston, Texas

This church is located in the medical district around MD Anderson. CITC has three different meetings in different spaces and have not had an exclusive space for anytime in their seven years of ministry. The spaces available in their area are limited and expensive. During the week they utilize free or rented spaces for Sunday Worship, Bible Studies, and other gatherings. CITC reaches doctors and medical students that live and work in the medical district. They also have a revolving door as many students are only in Houston for a season and then move on. This has resulted in a consistent, but not expansive budget. Moving out of the medical district to secure a building would take them out of the place they have been called. CITC is exploring the options and counting the cost of each part of their ministry to determine if they should stay mobile or if they should secure a seven day a week lease space.

City Church in Plano, Texas

This church is meeting in the Angelika Theater in Legacy Town Center. Legacy Town Center is a mixed use development at the center of one of the hottest real estate markets in Texas. Companies like Toyota and Liberty Mutual are joining Frito Lay and JC Penny as they call this area home to their corporate offices. City Church is five years old and has always been in a mobile location. In order to find a building or lease space, City Church would need to relocate to a different area. Pastor Ray Harmon shared with me that they have been called to the Legacy Town Center Area and he understands that relocating out of Legacy Town Center would not be in line with who they are called to reach. City Church is looking to see how they can leverage the theater space and other spaces around them to be the best stewards they can, so that they can be a generous church. Like CITC, City Church is in a high rent district and the spaces that they use look different than what they had pictured two or three years ago. By leveraging the Theater, engaging in Apartment Life ministry, and ministering to the people who live and work in and around Legacy Town Center, City Church can show the love of Christ to many people without buying or leasing a building of their own.

Chase Oaks Church in Plano, Texas

This church planted a Hispanic Campus on the east side of Plano. Chase Oaks is a multisite church but their Hispanic Campus basically functions as a church plant. The church meets in a local elementary school while doing seven-day-a-week ministry in the Chase Oaks Family Center just down the street. This ministry center allows Chase Oaks to offer ESL classes, bible studies, and other ministry programming during the week. We have seen the ministry center concept work in Texas, California, and Seattle in a multisite context. The community center can be a good option to provide church planters with a midweek space to offer youth programs for their families.

These examples show how the church can use spaces for their ministry without buying a church or building a church facility. If your church is considering a space outside your target area I would encourage you to strongly consider how that move will affect your ministry. I have seen a five-mile move contribute to a church plant losing core members and having to shut down. Exploring every temporary option available can help you leverage your existing space at an affordable cost to keep the focus on the ministry in front of you. In the meantime, saving cash to secure a space in the target area will prepare you to lease or purchase a space. In the examples above, real estate prices are expensive and opportunities are limited.

Prior to making a real estate decision, challenge your leadership to answer the following questions:

Why do we need a building?

Have we maxed out the space we currently have?

Can we afford a facility in our target area?

Are we ready to increase the amount we spend on a facility?

How can our church best utilize space in our target area?

If you do not know the answers to the above questions, then I would recommend you pause before signing a lease or purchasing a building. Count the cost, get clarity, and develop an understanding of your capacity. A building or lease space is a tool that can add value to your ministry, but a facility that does not align with your CLARITY or CAPACITY can cripple your ministry. A space that does not fit your budget or moves you away from your target area can cause you to miss opportunities to maximize your ministry. As you process your facility options, make sure your team understands why each option is the right space or the wrong space. Push your team to ensure you do not occupy a space for the wrong reasons. Remember the church is not a building; a building is a tool to be used by the church.

“When you think about a campus launch, and you want to launch during COVID, what does a staffing configuration look like? How much of it should be bivocational/covocational in light of the meeting restrictions or do you launch in the same way you might have pre-COVID?

In This Episode, You’ll Discover:

Why it is important to staff for competencies
Different considerations for a planned church plant

Shareable Quotes (#NewChurches):

“One of the things COVID reveals is the weight of the work of ministry and what is being done by whom, where, when, why.” – @toddadkins
“As a church plant, you can focus only on what is essential and you don’t have that burden of the large launch strategy that is pervasive right now in the church planting space. You get to rewrite the book.” – @toddadkins
“This is why staffing for competencies rather than felt needs is so important.” – @danielsangi
“The competency and the profile of who you would want as a campus pastor is the same COVID or no COVID, if you are staffing for competency.” – @danielsangi
“The thing that changes is the amount of time you might hire them for and the amount of hours that you are going to put into a new campus.” – @danielsangi
“I would still say if you have the systems and you have the person, then launch campuses during COVID, but don’t put the same amount of staffing hours into it. Instead consider that person more as a community or neighborhood pastor.” – @danielsangi
“It’s all about having a committed, competent core, and you can get that during this time.” – @toddadkins

“There seems to be a common question between my multisite friends. We have two locations and they are both meeting at schools and because of COVID we have shrunk back to one location and we are doing small outside services. Likewise, even some of the very large multisite churches are closing locations and collapsing them back to their sending campus. Do you think that this is permanent given renting from schools will likely change, and, if so, what can we do to build momentum when conventional growth metrics are free-falling? FYI, we do online and get pretty solid engagement and reach, It’s been great to reach this new audience, but how do we make sure that we don’t leave our established people behind. Thanks for the steady hand in difficult times.”

What challenges churches that rent their meeting space are facing
How churches can continue to connect with established members

Shareable Quotes (#NewChurches):

“I’ve talked to several churches whose schools are already telling them they can’t meet there.” – @toddadkins
“Someone may be attending your small group, but they are attending a different church online in the morning.” – @toddadkins
“There are going to be a lot of church planters, house churches, and smaller churches that come out of this.” – @toddadkins
“With the economy being the way it is, and how COVID has affected it, sooner or later there are going to be businesses who want the rental income.” – @danielsangi
“I do believe that multisite is still a valid and valuable strategy alongside church planting.” – @danielsangi
“What our city needs is healthy, thriving, growing, and multiplying churches that are reaching the lost.” – @toddadkins

by unSeminary: Welcome to the unSeminary podcast. I’m excited to be talking with Michael Volbeda, Executive Pastor of Ministries at Brentwood Baptist Church in the Nashville, Tennessee area. Brentwood went from two to four campuses in 2014 and has since grown to eight locations. As time went on, the church realized it was operating as if it still had only two locations to manage.

Michael is with us today to talk about how Brentwood’s sudden growth forced it to restructure and develop a new way to align its campuses while allowing for customization.

Find the right model for your church. // Many multisite churches have a video venue for their campuses, but that model didn’t fit what Brentwood was trying to accomplish. After researching what other churches were doing, they decided a live preaching model resonated with them best. Rather than having a franchise/cookie cutter structure for sites, their goal was to allow each campus to have a different name and feel, which were chosen to reflect the communities they were in. In this case, Brentwood Baptist is the “parent organization” but at each campus they offer as close to a customizable experience as they can.Maintaining alignment. // There are certain aspects that all campuses hold in common, such as the alignment of the weekend messages. The preaching team meets for a retreat and the sermon calendar is planned in advance. Theological research and background info is provided for sermons, but then campus pastors can take it in whatever direction they want to based on what fits their congregation. Each Monday, all eight campus pastors meet to talk about the upcoming service and share how they are moving forward with the message as well as hone their craft together. Balancing alignment with customization. // Brentwood has maintained a strong alignment across its campuses, but they also allow a fair amount of creativity at each site. Working toward alignment among the different locations while remaining open-handed to allow customization is a tension to be managed. This is what ultimately led to some restructuring as Brentwood realized they were still operating like they only had two campuses instead of eight. After clarifying their mission, vision and values, they created a new approach to strategic planning and ministry alignment that they call OKRs, which comes from the book Measure What Matters by John Doerr. OKRs stands for objectives and key results. What are the most critical things to focus on? // Of all the things a church could be doing, the way to start is to ask what items are the most mission-critical and important. These things begin to help you understand what is an objective. Set some very clear objectives of what you want to accomplish. Then lay out specific key results that you can measure along the way. Drive all activity and focus toward those things. Brentwood has a 5 year vision to have: 500,000 gospel conversations, 10,000 disciples making disciples, and 100 healthy congregations (not campuses). Break down each of these huge objectives bit by bit as an overall organization, and allow campuses to break them down further based on their specific community challenges and needs. Brentwood, for example, realized they needed a better training process for gospel conversations; people needed to understand and see themselves as missionaries where they live, work and play. So that helped them to take their next step and put some dates on that key result.Helping the church change direction. // Setting up OKRs and applying dates to the key results helped Brentwood to hold themselves accountable. Each campus came up with their own version of unique ways to engage their congregation to get involved. Churchwide OKRs, campus OKRs and then individual OKRs developed by the staff helped everyone to row together, and the whole organization was able to pivot as a result. OKRs also were integrated into the Brentwood staff’s performance reviews and were a regular part of staff meetings. They helped people prioritize work for the week or month. Brentwood uses a review system three times a year as a big part of the conversations on what is being achieved in each location.Rethink and adjust paths. // If you’re behind on your key results, or something unexpected happens (like a pandemic), the benefit of the OKR approach is that you are able to reshuffle, tweak, and adjust the key results. The objectives of the church stay the same, but key results can be changed to take current conditions into account.

You can learn more about Brentwood Baptist Church at www.brentwoodbaptist.com. To see a sample of Brentwood’s OKRs, download this document.

Whitepaper #2 on unique Multisite Strategies.

(See the first whitepaper featuring Life.Church here).

Manna Church based in NC was featured in Outreach Magazines Top 100 list on all three of their categories, Fastest Growing, Largest and Top Reproducing Churches. This is their incredible story discussing their multiplication strategies.

We sat down with Senior Pastor Michael Fletcher and downloaded his wisdom. We ended with this resource jam packed full of insight on how Manna Church through trial and error finally landed on a multisite strategy that works for their church and their unique calling. With a vision to see a church at every large military base, Manna has fine tuned their strategy to create 15 successful campuses across the US in addition to a number of home churches and more in the works. The ‘why and how’ they capture this vision is incredible.

Here are some of the main takeaways from this resource (to name a few).

In this whitepaper Micheal speaks to the challenge of ministering to members of the military due to frequent redeployment. All churches deal with turn over, but due to Manna’s high percentage of military congregants they experience much greater than average losses of people. Manna flipped the script and changed the high turnover rate instead into an average growth rate of 18%.

Another key lesson from the whitepaper is how they internally identify, train up and send new leaders to launch and run new campuses. They use a very unique approach that they have found great success with (you’ll have to download the whitepaper to see what it is :)). Pastor Michael also dives into the why and how launching ‘portable campuses’ is a key strategy of their growth and sustainability (and why they choose Portable Church®!)

Again, there is even more to the resource than what we’ve listed, but we hope this intrigues you enough to read this short, 6 page resource about one of the leading multisite churches in the United States.

*When our team sat down with Pastor Michael, we were so blessed and amazed by his perspective. And guess what… we recorded our conversation so you can listen and be blessed too! We weren’t expecting as much as we were getting so we started the recording a little late, but we strongly encourage you to check out this story and the recording. Let it inspire you to move into the unique calling God has placed on your church.

If your church is considering multiplying or adding another campus check out the video here and make sure you download the resource for the full story!
