As summer starts to heat up, the journey for planting a new church is just beginning for many who are called to start new churches. There’s a lot to consider when discerning God’s call for you to plant a church. One thing we know is useful: seek wise counsel.

This month we include an Exponential Podcast with Brett Andrews, Senior Minister of New Life Christian Church, Chantilly, VA. You’ll learn a lot if you take a break from what you’re doing and listen to the wisdom of 20+ years of ministry packed into a few minutes. You’ll also hear from a few who have planted churches out of New Life and hear about our Church Planter Residency program.

Creed Branson will stretch you to consider the concept of Emotional Intelligence in his blog we introduce here. We’ve also included a PlanterPlan Tip that was requested from some of our users. Check out the video as we continue to build our library of video resources here.

Don’t forget about Exponential Regionals, in particular, the one we’re hosting here in the Washington DC area. We hope to see you there!

This Newsletter is for you, so let us know what you want to hear about. Contact us here if you have some specific ideas.

Brett Andrews, Senior Minister, New Life Christian Church

Brett Andrews planted New Life Christian church in the Washington DC area in the 1990s with the vision to reach lost people in a metropolitan area that would have an impact on the world. This podcast, produced by Exponential, dives into his experience with church planting, along with valuable lessons he’s learned along the way.

You’ll also hear from Dan Smith, Vince Antonucci and Dale Spaulding, all of whom have shared time along Brett’s church-planting journey. Andrews planted New Life Christian Church in the Washington DC area over 20 years ago, and as a church, they’ve planted nearly 100 churches during this period.

New Life has served as a seedbed for many church plants, as well as other organizations that support church planting including the beginnings of Exponential. Passion for Planting, a ministry of New Life, provides resources, training and project management for church planters.

Emotional Intelligence of King David

Creed Branson
Chief Operating Officer, New Life Christian Church and the nZone

So what is emotional intelligence? How does self-awareness fit with EI? What are the components of EI? How do the various components of EI work together to form the impression others have of me and what can I do about it?

“Emotional intelligence (EI) is the area of cognitive ability that facilitates interpersonal behavior.” More info…

I decided to write a series of blogs using biblical characters to illustrate the importance of emotional intelligence.  For example, in First Samuel we find a very brave boy who counted on God in a way not credited to any other before or after this time. There is no person in the bible who loved God more than King David; at least no one who expressed his love of God more than David. We see this in his writing of the Psalms and how he was described as a man after God’s own heart. In the area of emotional intelligence it seems God honors a man who can emotionally express his love for Him.

PlanterPlan Tip: Phases, Milestones and Tasks

Here’s a quick video overview of the relationship between Phases, Milestones and Tasks. Take a look and see how we display these different types of tasks to help you work with PlanterPlan as you prepare to launch a new church.

Phases are a group of Milestones that are similar in nature. Phase I, Getting Started, includes milestones like Affirming the Call, Initiating Planter Coaching, etc.

Milestones combine a group of tasks and indicate a significant measure of work in PlanterPlan. By default, there are 47 milestones required for launching a new church.

Tasks get down to the nitty-gritty. Each task as a purpose, description and series of actions required to complete the task. Some large tasks are broken down into subtasks when it makes sense.

Our goal is to make it easy to navigate through PlanterPlan. Check it out!

Book Recommendation: Planting Missional Churches

by Ed Stetzer and Daniel Im

Planting a church is one of the most exciting adventures you’ll ever embark on. It’s also one of the hardest. It requires initiative, leadership, strategy, systems, and a lot of prayer.

In this second edition of Planting Missional Churches, not only will you find a completely redesigned book with new content in every single chapter, but you will also find several new chapters on topics such as church multiplication, residencies, multi-ethnic ministry, multisite, denominations and networks, and spiritual leadership. So if you’re planting a church, be prepared. Use this book as a guide to build the needed ministry areas so that you can multiply over and over again. For additional resources visit www.newchurches.com/PMC.

“Planting Missional Churches was the category-defining book for church planting for a decade. Now, updated with new research, observations, and Daniel Im as coauthor, it is a must read for every church planter.”
– Matt Chandler, lead pastor, The Village Church

Exponential Regional hosted by New Life Christian ChurchRegional in Washington DC Area

Register Here

New Life Christian Church and Passion for Planting are excited to host the Washington DC Exponential Regional here at our home church. Regionals are designed to be more accessible to church leaders in local geographic areas, especially for leaders who are unable to attend Exponential’s national events OR need a more affordable option to bring their entire team! These regional gatherings include breakout conversations to help unpack the main session content in more detail and are shorter in length to help leaders save travel expenses. BUT, they’re still filled with the full punch of the national event theme. These gatherings include 5 main sessions and 4 conversation breakouts.

Join hundreds of leaders for inspiration, encouragement and equipping at Exponential’s Washington DC Regional church planting conference at the nZone in Chantilly, Virginia. Register early as space is limited at these smaller, more intimate gatherings.
