3 Insights from Nona

1. To truly build the church online, Groups trump Pages

Facebook has the potential to allow us to return to what Nona considers to be a Christ-like model of ministry, which is to meet people where they are and deliver the good news of Jesus where they are. Facebook groups offer this exact opportunity as you can connect with other people about their needs every hour of every day of the week.

A Facebook group allows you to create a “living room” for your church online. It’s the place that you can invite people inside of your ministry. You can get to know them, they can get to know you, and most importantly, they can get to know each other.

One point of caution is to be strategic when choosing a leader of your online group or campus. If you wouldn’t appoint that person to launch a new physical location or if you wouldn’t be comfortable with that person leading a Bible study or a ministry in your church, they’re probably not the best person to lead your Facebook campus.

2. Facebook is no longer a place for “broadcast media”

The primary method of media in the world used to be “broadcast media.” This is where an organization throws a message out to the wind and hopes it gets received by the intended audience. This approach is uni-directional and doesn’t allow for very much conversation or dialogue.

The new method of media that is being pioneered by companies like Facebook is “social media”. This is where advertising is no longer a monologue from a provider to a purchaser, but a dialogue between all the involved parties. If you want to successfully market on Facebook, this is your new best strategy.

3. When building an online presence, focus on building the kingdom not a platform

Most of the conversations Nona has with leaders is about how to build their personal platform. She thinks that often times we forget that our purpose is to build the kingdom of God not our own platform. We as the Church have to remember that we’re just conduit of the gospel.

Our purpose should be to create an online community where people can encounter more and more of Jesus, his message, and his people. Our focus should not be to get more people to come and be a part of our program or platform. If that becomes our primary focus, people will leave disappointed because they came looking for God but they ended up finding you.
